Body Stand
I was wondering if anyone might have some measurements or drawings for a bug body stand. I'm looking for something where I can put the pan on jack stands and the body above the pan,but still be able to roll the body out if I need to work on the pan. I'm limited on space.
I just bought a '66 bahama blue baby. My wife calls it "Baby New Year". We just got her yesterday.
I am a NEWBIE, but have ambition to fully return her to her deserved glory.
As soon as I can I will post pictures of my BNY
Thanks.

I've found that the easiest way to work with VWs (and not have a garage filled with expensive clutter) is to build a 2x4 rack the same size as the perimeter of the bug.
Put some big casters on it (yep the $10 each) on them..
you then can roll the bug around your garage
When you want to flip the shell on it's side - use a twin mattress - you will not dent the car if you do this slow... you then can paint the underside and do your repairs.
When it comes time to work the chasiss... remove the front beam, and rear supsension.. use the same "castor jig" to move your pan around.
I have a more ellaborate one.. for some reason the wood one still works best.

This was made from scrap 2X4's. It is tall enough to go over the pan while on jack stands but with tires on it was very close as I remember (it has been close to 10 years since the pan has had any suspension on it. The one set of wheels are fixed and the other set of wheels are castered.
My pan is now sitting on a home made rotisserie and it can be slid over to the stand and the body can be slid over and on to the pan by one person.
I hope this helps

My opinion is worth slightly less than what you paid for it.

Rotisserie found on Volksforum.com has one of my favorites built of wood. Finally found it after a lot of search year or so back couldn't get the english side of the forum to talk with the guy, even tried searching the forum with no luck. Don't know how to post the pix I have of it or I would, sorry. http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/ ... matics.jpg, if that helps. I'm a computer dumbass, just done a lot of searching on this, I'm hurtin for space in my garage.

When I need extra room in the garage just rotate it so the pan is vertical and you have over 3 feet extra room.
If necessary, with some careful finessing I can store the pan under the body and it mount.
I originally designed it so that the pan, still on wheels could be rolled under the stand. The only place it hit was the gear shift which meant that I had to lift the stand two inches to get the stand over it. I don't remember it the engine was in the way or not, the body has been on the stand for over 10 years now.
With the carpet on the ends, I can turn the body over to work on it when necessary. When I had to sift t he body foward for FG repair I added another 2 X 4 where I needed the support and added carpet there too. Worked great!

Right now it is being used as a combination work bench and painted part storage facility. If you want to empty the bench quickly, rotate it.
