No more MAPP gas? Cylinder recall-Jan 2012

Post by winifredevw »

I went to Lowe's to get a new cylinder of mapp gas and they were out, no biggie, Ill just stop at the hardware store, they were out too. The sales-guy tells me all mapp gas has been recalled because of defective valves or something, he wasn't sure exactly why.
I came home and found this- (WARNING graphic images on this site, don't click on the "defect" tab if you don't want to see the injuries)

Have you guys heard anything about this?

Actually MAPP gas ( methylacetylene-propadiene propane) has not been around for years, there was only one plant that manufactures it in north America (Canada actually) and it was shut down several years ago.... Replacement is MAP//PRO which is Propylene....

And the cylinder problem is old news (unless there is a "new" problem) .... Been fixed along time ago.... Big box salesmen is uninformed as usual for big box employees.... IF you check dates on the defects link they are almost 3 years ago....

I did read and notice the dates.... thought I'd interrupt there too, but... if anyone else is like me, They'll have bottles like that anywhere from a few days old, to several years old. It's definitely valid info.

Hmmm.. I bought a bottle of MAPP gas fairly recently, certainly less than 6 months ago.will have to check the recall list..

Perhaps the "big box" guys just got the memo.
Perhaps they finally did a recall...
I sent the link/warning to my son, he's been using the heck out of my torch plumbing his house.

Don't mistake my first post as brushing issue off.... Any FUEL application has its dangers.... Always use caution... It's ironic that only MAPP seems to be mentioned a lot in "problem" when "propane" cylinders are exactly the same (manufacturing process-materials) as MAPP cylinders except for color (MAPP and MAP//PRO are usually yellow- propane can be most any color)..... Oxygen cylinders are "usually" blue, but have different thread (left-hand I believe) ....

You guys are right, MAPP hasn't been made since '08 as far as I can tell, but who knows how many bottles are still floating around. I stopped by Lowe's again today and the spot where the MAPP used to be still says "MAPP GAS" on the price label hanging on the shelf. Like Piledriver, I just bought a bottle of MAPP, not Map-pro, not long ago. I picked up a bottle of Propylene (same yellow color) and there is a full weld around the outside of the neck, so maybe the problem is solved.

I also found this discussion interesting, where MAPP might be corrosive, and resistance welding.

I think for my own peace of mind, I won't use any bottle labeled MAPP.

According to...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adiabatic_ ... emperature

MAPP burns at 3650° f. with air.

Propane burns at 3596° f. with air.

MAPP does not offer that much more for heat in the end....

I have one of those Bernzomatic pro torches, the kind with the hose and the holster and bottle holder.

I assure you the difference is between MAPP and propane seems MUCH more than 50 degrees having used both.

Sweating a 1/2" line with MAPP is almost instant, more than a few seconds the solder will cook out, tube/fittings glowing cherry red.
(this is a bad thing, it ruins the copper)

Using propane with the same torch takes time.

At least it seems they have finally really solved the problem.

I have to make a correction in one (or more ) of my previous statements about MAPP gas, MAP-PRO gas RECALL.... Apparently its a new voluntary recall as of January 2012 by Worthington Cylinder..

http://www.mapcylinderrecall.com/

Apologies to any that were mislead my any previous information I posted...

New bottles manufactured after January 15, 2012 will have a black diamond on top of bottle signifying that it has new style cutoff valve... And are deemed safe...
