Which Hand Held Tach is Best, Analog or Digital?

Post by Jim Ed »

Which tach is better, this analog tach

Actron CP7605 Dwell/Tachometer/Voltmeter Analyzer

or this digital tach?

Actron CP7677 Automotive TroubleShooter - Digital Multimeter and Engine Analyzer

Can you please recommend a digital tach?
TIA!

The analog tach was better.

The one built into my Actron digital advance timing light seems like a good combination.

I also have an Actron multimeter with K type input, reads dwell/PW/RPM etc, but it has issues in that it cannot read the AC component (noise) on a DC signal like a "real" meter should, and it's not true RMS.

Mines a few years old, so they may have solved that stupid problem, IIRC mine ws ~$80 years ago.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I bought a digital Actron Digital Multimeter CP7678 on ebay.
It measures RPM and a lot of other things.

Mine an older yellow Actron 100 series, K type TC. inductive pickup etc.

IIRC it was only ~$90 at the time, apparently they are little more these days...

I have a similar featured digital timing light from Actron, toggles from timing to RPM on the fly, very easy.

that tach/DMM is sweet, I would love to take my fluke out of my car tool box and keeep in my electronics desk, that would make an easy repalcement.
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously.
