Fun Fact of the Day: Wringing

Post by ProctorSilex »

Wringing is the process of sliding two blocks together so that their faces lightly bond. Because of their ultraflat surfaces, when wrung, gauge blocks adhere to each other tightly. Properly wrung blocks may withstand a 75 lbf (330 N) pull.
I thought that was interesting (and shop theory related).

The "feel" for the wrist pin sliding into the piston is also called a "wring" fit. Not a press fit, but very close with zero play.

very cool. and cool to finally have a name for the feel of a proper wrist pin fit. probably the only tolerance on a ACVW engine that acutally could be called tightly controlled lol, I think its -0.0+.0003?
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously.

I used gauge blocks, and would do that to make them easier to work with, but never knew there was a term form it.

Cool
