Bus automatic?
I tried to search. Nada.
I'm told you can use a Folts conversion kit to fit a Bus automatic into a swingaxle Beetle same as you would an 091.
Is this true and how much power can they take?

Is that the kit that converts IRS boxes to swing axle?MinamiKotaro wrote:I tried to search. Nada.

I think it'll need raising about 4" in the s/a chassis unless you cut off the framehorns as the oilpan on the autobox makes it a lot wider than the s/a gearbox. Its about 12" wide and the space between the framehorns is about 8".
I've been looking into fitting the automatic gearbox from a type3 (pretty much the same as bus's) into my 1970 bug and came to the conclusion that the framehorns either need cutting off at the torsion tube or slimming down dramatically and reinforcing somehow.

That's what I was afraid of. I knew the autos were bigger but I didn't know they were that much bigger.
Oh, well. I see the V8 guys getting the great 60-fts and consistancy of an automatic and I was envious. I guess you've just got to do everything the hard way with a Bug.

That might work in a bug too depending clearance between top of auto tranny and underside of boot floor.Joe vw wrote:This is how I mounted an automatic vanagon in a trike, irs suspention though. It did move the engine back 1" and would make it a tighter fit.
Auto had different length driveshafts each side didn't it?

It will work in a bug, there are a few racers that run automatics.Zebedee wrote: That might work in a bug too depending clearance between top of auto tranny and underside of boot floor.

This design was as I imagained when I looked under a race bug that never lifted between shifts. The bug I saw was at a strip in NewJersey a few years ago.

Re: Bus automatic?
With all the fab work welding in an upper support as shown above, why not just install the TA pivots and go IRS? Cheaper than the Folts kit by a long shot.MinamiKotaro wrote:,,,,I'm told you can use a Folts conversion kit to fit a Bus automatic into a swingaxle Beetle .....

I have fitted a Type3 auto into my Oval with a 2.7lt Type 4 motor bolted to it.Have had the trans beefed up and a 2,500rpm stall convertor made for it.

The Bus/Vanagon autos have Bus CVs. (Shocking but true)jan72 wrote:Hello.
I have a late type 3 (1972) with a wasserboxer on it. How complicated would it be to install a vanagon automatic transmission? Do the CV joints match? Does the total length of the transmission match?
Thank you.
Find some Thing stubs or 924 stubs and bolt it in.
(The stub axles, anyway)
The CVs can be modified to take the T3 auto axles, little relief in the spline area, will go together fine. (I think Bruce2 posted details awhile back, I just had at it until it worked)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I am after part 19, the governor side drive drive shaft flange on an auto box. Is that what you refer to by Thing stubs Piledriver? Because I am not having much luck in finding the part, but can get my hands on a Thing autobox.Piledriver wrote:The Bus/Vanagon autos have Bus CVs. (Shocking but true)

The "thing stubs/axles" I was referring to (or 944) are the OUTBOARD end, in the trailing arms/bearings.
The bus tranny end is already 100mm CV...
(The goal being all bigger T2 or T4 CV joints)
The T3 auto axles can fit the bus CVs with a little work on the CVs... Splines match, just have to get teh depth right.
I AM working on the dangerous assumption the auto +T3 auto axles is the same width overall...
Haven't measured it myself lately... (Last looked seriously at it ~20+ years ago)
