Irs trans noise
'72 irs trans noisy in all gears. New throw out bearing. No metal on drain plug. Shifts fine in all gears. Does not pop out of any gear. More of a wiring sound with slight grinding/rumbling. If clutch is pushed in while moving or sitting still, noise stays. Only when put into neutral, clutch in or out, while moving or sitting still does the noise stop. Thoughts. Main shaft bearing or ????

Weird that it makes noise with BOTH clutch in or out...I do not see how a problem with the transmission would cause this unless clutch disc is not really fully releasing and there is drag on it turning the trans.. in which case it sounds like MS bearing.

Agreed....a dragging pilot bearing in the gland nut would be another possible cause. Either way (clutch or pilot bearing dragging) there'd be grinding when going into Reverse with the engine running. Is that happening?

Thanks for the replies. This also has me baffled. So I put in a pint of Lucas Engine Oil Stabilizer and that shut it up...for now.
Yes I did drain it before adding the lucas.
