Back lash ??
Ok question for experienced builders. Im a little new at this but learning a lot. I recently changed my r&p to 3.44. Everything seemed to measure well. The trans works beautiful. Im solid mounted with just an aluminium tub in the rear of car, so you can here everything thats goin on in trans. Pre load is good the backlash is around .005. I do have a lopey cam . When driving the car its fine on accel and fine on coast. But when you get to that spot where your right in between (barley on the gas ) the cam starts to lope i feel and here the mesh kinda jiggle. Sound best desctibed as a chicka chicka sound that will disapear when accel or let off the gas. R&P arent making excessive noise and pattern looked good. The trans was fully built weddle internals. Pinion and mainshaft bearings new. And play checked out. Just feels a little odd, mabe loose in that one area. Am i being paranoid or is there something i should check. Its a swing axle 4 bolt pinion retainer. Threaded diff. End gear play is good also. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Pinion depth was on the money also.

Pinion has solid spacer between 3rd and 4th with a nut on end of pinion.

There are a ton of moving parts between the tires and engine -- try jacking up the rear wheels and moving/rocking them and see if you can determine where the slop is at (that is something I've experienced in the past and after checking, just filed it away and didn't worry too much about it)
On most performance builds, I set the lash almost to zero.... That is something I learned from a guy a long long time ago, seem to help make R&P sets/transmissions live a bit longer in the wild LOL

Its hard to describe the sound. Its the sound of the gears meshing but a quick short sounds that go with the lope of the cam as it jerks the car . Ive never street drivin this motor prior to changing the r&p. Ive driven it before with another motor but the cam nor motor was as radical.

Re: Back lash ??
Ok. So heres my update. Since day one of getting this trans from the builder it has had lucus additive in it. After i changed my r&p i put just 80/90 in it to put some miles on it as per weddle instruction. I have dumped old oil and put the lucus back in with my normal gear oil and its way quieter. Like it was before. I guess weddle racing gears make noise that i didnt notice before because i never had just 80/90 in it. Was my 1st build was cautious researched it even asked dumb questions. But to me they wernt dumb. Motors im plenty use to. Trannys are new. Now to see if it will hold a 9 second pass. Thanks for those who responded.

I'm curious which brand R&P you installed, and what your "normal" gear oil is ..

Normal to me is 85/90 valvoline and r&p was from weddle made by U.S gear. No its not the 1000.00 race version but imo i dont care how much you harden the metal its still a small ring gear and 3x the price isnt making it 3x stronger. Next trans im back to vw 3.88 with taller gearing to equal what i have now. Before you bust my stones remember im new at transaxles. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I love learning new things. I may ask dumb questions sometimes but thats how i learn. Im never a know it all. Not at all. Thanks guys.

I kinda suspected you may have used the US Gear version. Actually, the more expensive R&P is made of superior material and lasts many times longer in severe applications. This isn't conjecture, but rather the results that racers see.
For future reference, ERCO has an econo version R&P for around the same cost (as US Gear) thats almost on par with a stock R&P .. FAR longer lasting and better quality than the US Gear R&P. Rancho will sell these to you.
There was a good build thread on Samba a few months back, in which Ray Vallero was modifying a super diff to supply adequate oil to the spiders & side gears. That's a worthwhile thread to search out for anyone using a super diff for anything other than drag racing. Not enough oil gets into those .. it's a real problem.

Good to know. Ive seen it done on IRS super diffs there was no need on my threaded diff it has 2 big holes about 5/8" diameter on an angle with a scoop tab if you will. I figured plenty of oil can get in so i didnt drill any additional holes. Ill check it out tho to see if its a different write up.
