installing 091 1st in a t1 box

I have been searching and not been able to find what I am looking for , so I will ask.
I am building a box for the strip and have heard of people using a 091 1st gear in place of the stock 1st
This will be built in a white rhino case 3.88 R/P super beetle shaft turned down and keyed. I believe the 1/2 slider hub has to be machined thinner because the 091 1st is wider . If someone could advise me or point me in the correct direction I would appreciate it .

Yes, you need to machine the slider or use an 091 slider.

I have a gear that I haven't played with yet. I saw the one guy in the link said to grind off .017" off the back side of the gear and you were done if using the 091 slider.

How are you guys grinding them down? Or are you just doing special bits in the lathe? Also is this the simplest way to do it?

If not using the 091 slider do you just machine off ~.020" off the first gear side of the slider?

I don't machine any off of the gear and never had any problems. Just shim it accordingly and use the 091 slider. If you are using a late 002 slider, then yes, just machine the 1st gear side down in a lathe.
