002 vs 091 mainshaft bearing

Post by Casting Timmy »

I recently did an 091 using the Weddle aluminum gear housing which uses two bolts to keep the mainshaft bearing from moving out, but doesn’t have anything to keep it from rotating.

I was thinking about during the process it would have been nice if there was a counter bore with one of the tapped holes so the washer would grab into the bearing’s cutout to positively keep it from spinning as well as moving out.

So then I was wondering about doing this conversion on a housing for an 002 bearing and upgrading to the 091 bearing. Is it really that big of an upgrade on the 091 bearing with eliminating the 4th gear thrust washer? Or do you usually just stick with the correct bearing for the housing?

Or is it the oil grove in the housings feeding more oil to the bearing that is really the improvement? Is it worth while even on the 002 bearing to make an oil grove to take advantage of extra oiling of this bearing?

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas you have on this one.
