002 3rd/4th sliders options

Post by johnwalklett »

Hi guys,

For a few years now I've been buying new 002 3rd/4th sliders from VW classic parts, however yesterday I was informed these are no more and are now obsolete. As most boxes I rebuild need new sliders this is quite worrying. I can still but 113 sliders and hub as a complete unit but these are 3 times the price.

Now 091 sliders are still available but obviously the key groove is wider. I have assembled one with type 1 keys and on the bench and it appears to work. I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on using an 091 slider in an 002 application? I did consider having some special keys made?

Cheers John

I've seen that Weddle lists substituting the 091 slider for the 002 on their website, but haven't compared them that much. It does really make sense about the keys, also why I probably didn't like that MD2D hub and floating hubs adjusting out in a bus box I did. Definitely doesn't felt a little soft on the jig.

The closest I have done is an 091 slider with type 1 keys in an 091 box. My guess is that 091 sliders will be the future and custom keys would be a nice touch.

I've also wondered why they never made solid 091 3-4 keys, or I have thought about why not adding a rectangle insert and tacking it inside the key of 091 boxes. You would need to have new or modify the old spring clips though.

I believe they are hollow so the end of the spring is captured.

I recall Ivan Albins telling me over 25 years ago that they'd use 091 sliders on 002 keys with no issues. That was when they were grinding stock 091 cones down to 002 size, in order to true up (center) the cone, when reclaiming used VW 091 engagement teeth to use on their (Holinger made) straight-cut gears.

I never made the substitution myself, as I didn't care for the sloppy feel .. but it obviously can be done.
