trans rebuild question

Post by gerico »

OK guys...I need some opinions.
Do I attempt to rebuild a `74 single side cover trans myself or pay the $$$ to have a professional shop do it. I've never seen the inside of a VW trans but I learn quick. Problem is I don't have any special trans tools or jigs. This is for a street car not a racer.

If you are the type of person that can take complex things apart and get them back together without any leftover parts, then you are probably capable.
If the trans is in good shape and it just needs syncros, its a good candidate to learn on.
The tools are not a problem. For $175, ERCO sells a complete tool kit that gets you the pinion nut socket and the shift fork jig as well as other tools.
If you can afford to take your time, any problems could most likely be sorted out right here.
