Schematics, diagrams and shop drawings.

What helps me a lot is having a schematic or drawing to show me what goes where. Maybe some others have a better idea but I like to draw out where headlights, relays, tailights, switches etc. go before I start running wire. So if anybody has any schematics, diagrams or drawings that you use that might be helpful to others post them up.

Here are some wiring schematics and diagrams that you may or may not use. Don't think copywright is a problem.

Here ya go this should be at the beginning of the thread, before any diagrams. I think it would help everyone read the diagrams. You should start a new sticky and lock it so the info will be useful.

bob..

Are there any other sources..

I've always suggested the How to Build a Dune buggy because their drawings do not include schematic lingo diagragms... it shows you how to build a loom from bulk wire.

How to Build a Dune Buggy - Earl Duty
If you're new to offroad (or VWs) this book is an easy read. The perspective is how to go to a swap meet, select parts and build a sand rail. Overall, it has the easiest "how to wire it" without a kit diagragm and instructions out there. If you're not good with schematics, this is the book for you.

I heard rumor (sorry "rumour" -- Cannuck "humour") that there was a HP Books publication that used Dubs and Ford pintos for the diagragms..

You heard correctly tim, the book is HP books automotive electrical hand book written by Jim Horner

this is my #1 recommendation for some one considering wiring a car from scratch it covers layout ,panel building, picking the right wire gauge etc. i have several copies of this which i lend out to people who are seriously considering doing the job themselves

And yes Tim he does use vw And small ford components as references

another very good book on the subject is Hot Rod Wiring by Tim Remus and Dennis Overholser but a little aside here Dennis Overholser works for or did work for painless wiring so he is somewhat biased toward the product which is understandable don't get me wrong good product good advice contained in this book available from amozon .com

Speedy Jim wrote:Yes, the wiring as you described is OK.

The speedo needs to be grounded, for the Hi-Beam indicator
and for the back lighting. The OIL/GEN/TURN bulbs don't
require ground. Just run a thin wire from the speedo mounting
to any convenient chassis ground.

In its simplest form, the alternator wiring looks like this.

The alamrs & buzzer shown above are wired to the headlight switch with the red or positive side. The ground
side is wired to the key switch IGN post. These alarms have built in diodes, power only flows through them
one way, so when you have power on both wires, or just the ground wire, they do nothing. But kill power
to the ground with the lights on, they will sound off.
