CHT gauge not working

How do I bench test a VDO cylinder head gauge and sending unit to see if it is working. I have no reading on the guage. The sending unit is under the #3 plug and the two wires from there go to the gauge. Red wire to + and black wire to - on the back of the guage. Is this correct?

Try reversing the two. Some of the VDOs came with the labeling and instructions backwards.
