Class 11 Wiring

Post by fixxor »

Figured I would post this up to get some opinions on my wiring diagram. Plan on getting a SPAL cooler fan which states it pulls 6.5 amps. The air pump is 6.8 amps, and the roof LED says 8.2 amps but I checked it the other night it was only pulling 2.2 amps (I probably did something wrong).

(I dont know why the red lines got messed up on the resize, but click to get to full size)

Concerns: Breaker and relay amps and the wire gauge feeding breakers.

Thanks for any input.

fixxor, I am a bit conservative when it comes to electrical power from the gen/alt to the starter and to the switch; I usually go with 8 ga wires there... a just-in-case thing. VWs don't do it but I also run a breaker (slow burn) in the line to the switch. I size it to the power source so a stock Alt would use a 55 amp breaker; another just-in-case thing. For items like radios, that require (quick burn) protection, I rely on fuses instead of breakers. This is my opinion and I am sure not everyone is going to agree with it.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry I did not ask specific questions, here they are:

Using a relay for the ignition power because I dont know of any way else to do it, is this a good idea? And will the 75 amp be sufficient?

Running 10 awg for the power source for the relays, and then going to the actual component I am using the awg for the specific load, is this a good thing to do?

1 awg for the battery->cutoff->starter overkill?

Thanks Ol'fogasaurus, I already bought all the breakers but that is a very good point on the radio, I might just use the fuse included in the wiring for it. I will also use 8 awg for the starter->alt.

As far as the battery cables go, I am not sure you can be too big especially if you are traveling any distance with the cables; this is one subject where there is a lot of opinions on some things.

Do a search on voltage drop for a calculator. I used to use anywhere from 0 to 000 when we located the battery in the trunk on the right side. DaleM is into electrical stuff real big and I am sure he is going to post some of the good stuff.
