How does the Bosch lifetime guarantee work?

This is a corollary to my other question about my alternator. If it turns out to be the regulator (internal) then I may b entitled to a replacement alternator. I don't know if Bosch still offers a lifetime guarantee, but they did then (around 2005) on new alternators, only. I don't remember where I bought it either. Possibly a place in Oregon or else mail order. I think I remember filling out a registration form.
Does anyone have experience with this? How do I make a claim? If it came to the alternator I would probably swap in a cheap alternator, just to keep it running, but I would still want the Bosch.
