71 Baja - EFI, 1835, 002, Linkpin

Post by bajallama »

I am testing the waters on selling my 71 Baja. I bought it as a stock beetle back in 2004 and slowly built it up to what it is now. It has quite a bit of sentimental value to me but I am deciding to take another route for now. It runs great with a new motor that still needs to be broken in. The Megasquirt Furl Injection system is easy to tune even for the novice. I can go through the basics on adjustments you can make, but its pretty easy and dead reliable with not only support on this forum, but on the Megasquirt forums also. To turbocharge this setup would be super easy. The ECU can easily add fuel for boost with just a simple change of the fuel map. I had a 32/36 single on it, but the intake manifold would get so cold that the fuel wouldn't atomize after it left the carb throat. So for more performance and mileage than dual carbs, I did the Fuel Injection Conversion. Comes with a bunch of extra parts and VW nic-nacks. Here is the list of parts and upgrades:

Body:

1971 Standard Beetle
Currently Non-Op
Early Style Wide Eye Baja Kit
Primer Flat White
Straight, only small dent on drivers side door
No Sunroof!
Front Windshield has small crack in corner, bought it like that
Sylvania Silverstar Headlamps
Trailer Tailights
Rear turn signals, No Fronts but the wires are there
Baja double tube rear bumper
No front bumper at the moment, however I do have one

Electrical:

Completely Re-Wired with Aircraft grade Wires
Master Cutoff Switch mounted under dash next to Voltmeter (switch cuts-off ALL Power for emergency)
Really nice Sealed Battery mounted behind back seat, you could probably start a diesel off of it. 800+ cold cranking amps
Voltmeter
Autometer Monster Tach in place of Speedo(who needs one?)
Squareback Gauge cluster(fuel, turn signals, oil light, gen light, high beams)
Blaupunkt Stereo with new Pioneer speakers
New fuse boxes and relays for both the body harness and ECU

Engine
Fresh DP 1835cc less with than 100 miles
Type 2 002 Bus Trans
Ceramic coated pistons
10:1 Compression
Engle Mild Cam
Gene Berg Full Flow HD Pump
Remote Oil Filter with Stainless AN lines
Sand Seal
Chrome covers and Doghouse
Empi Valve covers
Oil Catch Can w/ vented Valve covers
Brand New Stock Clutch
Megasquirt EFI v2.2 running Fuel Only
CB Performance DP EFI end castings
CB Performance Fuel Rail with AN lines and GM Injectors
Nissan SR20 Throttle Body

Compag Laptop with Windows Xp and software setup for tuning the car
Extra Capacity Oil Sump
Centerline 5 lug front wheel, was going to use as a spare, comes with brand new Bridgestone AT Tire, although not mounted
The two most important books for any baja owner
Random Junk

The only thing that might show problems is the trans. I swapped this one in and it is currently solid mounted to the frame. Once the car starts rolling it starts to howl a bit and is progressive only on acceleration. On decel there is no noise. I don't know if its the pinion bearing or if its just cause its solid mounted, but it shifts into all gears perfectly fine. I was gonna swap it out for another used one (around 400) or exchange this one as a core. I have only posted this car up here for now, mostly because someone off of here I feel would appreciate it more. Drive it home! (although it is on Non-Op) My asking price as of now is $3700 and am only interested in trading for a CJ5(the dark side right?). If you are interested please email me at:

Looks like a solid runner, unfortunately bajas are pretty slow to sell these days, and unless you live in SoCal this is definetly the off season. Good luck with it, but I think you'll end up happier down the road if you hang onto it. If you are looking to get into a jeep, you must have money to blow :D
I don't always show my signature. But when I do, it's in this area.

Thanks man, ya I kinda figured that. Not really in a rush to sell and i have a lot of time put into the car. Oh I forgot to mention the car is in SoCal. Mostly need a Jeep to tow with, not be towed, most of the reason for selling the bug
