SOLEX H-30-PIC

Post by jshbrgs07 »

I need help as im new in fixing my own vw and relied much with a mechanic. Im a bit confused being a newbie. I have a 1968 1200cc beetle with a carb of solex H-30-PIC and I believe the jet sizes are stock except for its main jet. Im from the Philippines, specifically from Davao city with an elevation of 22m based on google

first question:
1.) the carb im using, is it the one they call the H30/31 or I have a Series 30 carb?if so is my carb ok for my Displacement?
2.) based on my location the jetting of my carb should it be leaner or richer? i am currently using a 122.5 main jet

Looking forward to hear and learn from all.

TIA

The H30/31PICT was sold as a "universal replacement" in the US (they even provided and adapter plate to allow it to fit on DP1600 intake manifolds)...for a 1600 they usually needed something like a 125 or 127.5 main.
I've seen them come with 115 or 117.5 mains which are way too small for a 1600, so I assume those were intended for a 1200 or 1300.
I'm thinking that the 122.5 is probably slightly bigger than you need, but that's just a guess - I've never actually used an H30/31PICT on a 1200.

thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking that as well that a 122.5 main is a bit oversized, will be trying a 120 main. However, with a standard 28PICT carb it was said that a standard main is a 120 or 122.5.

True, but the carbs aren't directly comparable. The H30/31PICT is more like the 31PICT-3 that was used on the European 1300DP engines. If the main jet is too small, you'll notice a little hesitation when you try to accelerate gently, say from 35-40 MPH in 3rd, but it goes away if you "fan" the accelerator pedal a little to get the accel pump to richen the mixture. A rule of thumb is that the inside of your tailpipe should be tan in color, if it's white you're too lean.

It has just been a week since i had it on x122.5 i will clean my tailpipe and observe it. At the moment my tailpipe end is black which would mean im running rich yeah? If by the week it is still black i will be putting on a x120.

Will keep you posted. Thanks.

So upon tinkering with the jet I finally found that an x115 works best for my 1968 1200cc vw beetle. Now, im planning to change my disributor and im quite confused as to which fits best for my bug should it be an SVSA or SVDA? the carb im using, is that what they call H30/31 or is mine different? because if it is im willing to replace my carb as well. As for my cooling system im still using the stock fan, is it possible to replace my cooling system with that of the cooling system of a 1600cc single port or twinport (whichever is best)? if so will it fit in directly?

TIA.
