What kind of wiring products are you using?

Post by mlauzon »

I would like to know what folks are using for wiring the sensors, fuel injectors, etc. I know the proper connectors need to be used with the sensors and fuel injectors ends. What gage wire for the sensors and injectors, sleeving, shrink tubing type, sheething (teflon?) is recommended. Also should wires be twisted, sheilded. Can plenum cable be used in automotive stuff?

Often, I have seen people using the ribbed plastic flex stuff, but, I am wondering if there is something else out there.

All comments, tips, links, photos appreciated.

yeah this is the covering I use

http://cableorganizer.com/expandable-sl ... ecommended

I use 20 gauge fro the sensors and 18 for the injectors. 16 gauge up to the fuel pump and 12 gauge to feed the relay board. I get my connectors from waytekwire.com

I twist all my wires to keep noise at a minimum.

Mario:

What series connectors do you use? I'm giving some thought to using those AMP AHD/Deutsch HD multipins when I go to do EFI on my Fox, to make it easy to remove sections of the bay harness.

Thanks for the links, too folks. :D

After a lot of looking and price shopping, I started getting my wire from here:
http://www.wireandsupply.com/category_s/37.htm

Good wire (no minimum lengths) at a good price, and quick service.

The best wire I have found hands down for any millivolt sensitive electronic applications in the underhood environment (Fuel injection, any kind of sensing and ignition) is silver plated copper.

The issue is this....any area of normal copper wire that is a junction that is exposed to air...i.e. at the crimp and strain relief area...is where unprotected copper alone will oxidize. Oxidized copper is a non-conductor...wheras oxidized or tarnished silver is still conductive with very little loss.

If the crimp is proper and hermetically sealed, you should have no issues within the crimp barrel unless there was a a fair amount of moisture present that entrain oxygen to later oxidize the copper. This wire has PTFE (teflon) jacket and is good to about 400F. You can also buy it in Ultraflex...supersoft and flexible. It costs about $120 to do a Djet or L jet harness with this. Ray

Ray,
Did you mean to include a link to "This wire" ?

 Sorry, I forgot to include links. www.mcmastercarr.com . Page 784. I have used part # 7304k121 among others. It is about 42 cents a foot in quantities over 100'. Ray

This would only work for a balanced pair wouldn't it? Like in telecommunications, balanced rs530 etc etc with a differential amp to cancel out the noise?

No harm though I'm sure.

Typically in automotive work with the kind of EMP noise we get you would be much better off just investing in wire with better jacketing ( putting it in silicone tubes) and/or properly shielding the components producing the noise and working to get clean noise free grounds. There is too much vibration to insure twisted pairs stay twisted. Ray
