Fuel tank with sump supply/return line routing

Hey all,

Quick question.

I have a Pacific Customs spun aluminum tank with the sump - similar to this: http://www.pacificcustoms.com/fueltank1016cfsump.html

Is there a rule of thumb or recommendation as to where to run the supply and return lines to ?

Is the return line from the sump ? and supply line directly into the tank ? or vice versa ?

So I'm assuming you're asking because this tank has no fittings at all on it right now? Typically both supply and return fittings on a tank like that would just be welded onto the sump (as low as possible) since you don't have to make additional changes inside the tank.

You generally don't want the return fitting at the top of the tank unless it has an internal pipe or hose to the bottom of the tank for it to exit below the fuel level most of the time to reduce fuel aeration. That doesn't mean it won't work, it's just not ideal. A supply fitting on top would obviously require an internal pipe or hose pickup down into the sump to work.

The "supply" fitting is for fuel from the tank going to the fuel pump. The "return" fitting is for fuel from the pressure regulator back into the tank.

Fittings (threaded bungs) are welded in.






I understand what a supply and return fitting is and how they pertain to fuel flow.

I'm just wondering if there is a "rule of thumb" that people typically use.
return to the sump and supply from the open tank - or the other way around.

I would draw the fuel supply off sump as it tends to always hold fuel (actual purpose of sump) and less of a chance for to take a gulp of air if you are doing something wild and crazy like rock crawling or what ever...
