Re: FI Turbo Build Up - Vee Dub Nut Build #3 (redo, or v3.1?
Last weekend I did a bunch of cleanup work on the intake manifold. I cut it all apart as I found some sugaring on the backside where the half couplings were welded. We evidently had some back purge issues during welding the first time. Anyways, I cut it all apart and cleaned everything back up, and also spent some time smoothing out the internal part of the t junction. It went back together well, and everything was nice and clean internally this time
Close up of weld city LOL... Decently smooth considering all that we did.
Now that I've built two of these intakes already (say three for doing this one twice, lol), I think just now know how best to approach building one from the start. So if I ever do it again, it will be the best one yet. LOL

Spent more time with tin work this weekend. This is job number 1 prior to the full mock build on the motor.
My modified 36hp doghouse experiment wasn't coming together as I wanted, so I shelved it and shifted gears for the time being. Instead I'm now working wi a late model FI shroud. I started by focusing on repair work and modifications to fit the high roof case. This shroud is supposed to be one if the better VW shrouds. It has a different oil cooler feed in the shroud, and has the factory Venturi ring on the back. It will also allow me to run the tstat flaps (albeit just wired open) as they are supposed to help direct airflow to the heads better.
Right now I'm just planning on plugging the heater outlets in place... That being said, I just might get the wild hair to go ahead and cut them off and weld in new metal. That said, I've got plenty of other things to do and don't really need to make more work for myself.
I also made my new breast plate tin. Nothing earth shattering here. Pretty well the same as I did in build #2. Still need to cut the hole for the intake pipe, but I'll do that with the plasma later.
Of course everthing will get sandblasted, cleaned, and a new coat of paint.
Venturi ring
Still just small things, but moving the right direction.

What is the purpose of the Venturi ring?

Same as a velocity stack on a carb. It reduces airflow losses so the air can enter smoother. It also quiets the fan down a bit.

I've been looking for ways to quiet down my motor. What year shroud should I look for?

This ended up with the same fate unfortunately.. I've fought waning interest in the project for the past couple of years, and ultimately didn't get this last attempt done either. I've shifted gears and am now working on a 71 bay window Bus for the family to use. As a result the Beetle has been moth balled for now. I ended up selling of quite a lot of these parts to some other STF'ers, but still have quite a collection of parts to use in the future, plus a newly acquired microsquirt module that may end up in the new Bus with some GSXR throttles. I'm still around, but just sort of lurking. There will be another turbo build I'm sure, but its just not priority right now.
