Re: 951 15" Phonies
I tried a bit earlier to add shims until the caliper cleared the wheel. With 15mm spacing, the caliper barely clears, maybe by 0.5mm. So 20mm spacers would fit right. And I already have them, I just need longer studs.
What would the problem be with ~0 ET? 20mm spacers would leave me just 3mm ET.
Now I'm not sure if even the 951 15" Phonies clear the calipers. I doubt that if the Cookies need 15mm, the wheel profile of the Phonies is so much different that it would clear without spacer... Just testing would prove. But now seeing that only the fronts don't clear my wheels, I am highly tempted to try with spacers, if there is no downside. Becasue I like my wheels so much more than the Phonies!

Downsides are probably manageable if the front tires are sane:
Rubbing on the fenders and a bit more steering effort... would pull harder if you had a flat due to scrub radius.
Either set of wheels rock, but hell, I think manhole covers look good.
(...and you won't find a cheaper set of forged rims)

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Sooooo results. 951 15" Phonies clear the calipers! This might be the only type of 15" wheels that clear the 944t brakes. However, i forgot to take pics, you have to believe me. I did not buy the set, i will first try to buy longer studs and install my Cookies with 21mm spacers. If it's too wide, i will think again next year what i will do: buy phonies or sell the brakes.

Re: 951 15" Phonies
Lanner, small question because I do not understand exacly from your website: can I use the later front hubs, rotors and Brembo calipers on early spindles? This way I can use the stock struts. I also have a flip kit for tie rods installed in the ealy spindles, so I can use them in the Bug, and I wouldn't machine the late spindles if I can use the old ones.
That's until I can test and see directly, but I am curious if the spindle itself is the same and maybe just the hub and rotor are different.

The early spindles use different bearings from late spindles. You can use the 86T spindles, hubs, rotors to bolt up to stock struts.

Re: 951 15" Phonies
Thanks Lanner. So I must find a way to use the 951 spindles. My brakes are off a '90 944t, the front strut mounting holes are 63mm apart, not 58mm as on early spindles. Also the bolts for strut/spindle mounte are 18mm not 20 as on early 944. So this is why I am trying to use my old spindles, but if this is the case, I will machine the 951 spindles to fit.
The speedometer cable is also a problem, but I can solve that easier because I have an electronic unit and I can use the ABS sensor and a small adaption circuit.

Re: 951 15" Phonies
Here is a nice comparison of 944 spindles. So, it seems that the hub/bearings are different and can not be retrofit to early spindles. Caliper bolts spacing is different (76.5mm early vs 94mm late). Strut bolts spacing is different (58mm early, 63mm late). Strut mounting flange thickness is different (20mm early vs 18mm late).
So, what I need to do now is: machine the 951 struts for flipped tie rod, make a 2mm spacer plate for the strut mount, adapt the hole spacing for strut bolts. Maybe I will elongate the bottom hole vertically. I am using the top hole for camber adjustment (horizontal elongated hole). What info would still be needed is if the strut mounting angle (0 position camber) is the same for early and late.

Re: 951 15" Phonies
Here is an update on wheels: As I said, 15" Phone Dials with ET 23.3, PN 95136210400 do fit over 944t front brakes (Brembo calipers). There is a good spacing between caliper and wheel (some milimeters, but I can not measure exactly). Here are some pics:

Good info Bug66, they look great. These are 15", 5 1/2" wide, ET30. However they are VERY expensive due to scarcity and their application on outlaws.
Anyway I now have 4 15" Phonies ET23.

Yep. I bought my 4 a couple of years ago. Payed 5-600 euros total, but it took like a year..
They pop on german ebay from time to time for a fair price.

Cool fun fact. They are forged in Norway, from Norwegian aluminium.
Now 4 are back in Norway on my car
