'74 412 Driver Seat anatomy

Quoting from an old post from Chris Hobbs here from 2004, he wrote "I just got my copy of the Types 1-4 Bentley CD set in the mail today. It is the real deal, an Adobe Acrobat-style reproduction of the factory repair manual microfiche set as it was distributed by VWoA circa 1981-82. Right now I'm checking out instructions on how to replace various 412 front seat adjustment cables--something you won't find in Haynes or Clymer."

Question, will that manual help to resolve seat back repair? I have the driver's seat locking when placing the seat back to its up position, see photo , taken before repair, we got that area to lock, but then the seat back doesn't hold and still flop backs. So we are thinking there is something inside the seat back, a locking mechanism, that needs repair. There must be something in addition, a locking bar?, to hold seat up. Thanks in advance ! Steve

So what exactly is the seat doing? Is it flipping/laying all the way down in the back seat?
So it locks in the upright position from what you are saying...but will not stay and then flips back?

Let me look at one of mine and see what is there. I have two with all of the upholstery stripped off. Ray

Hi Ray, update, we managed to repair the seat, had to get it done, so I could drive it LOL . My mechanic machined parts so the two metal pieces on the left and right sides of the bottom back would stop falling through. They again had to lock so the back would hold up and not fall back onto the back seat. Happy Holidays!

Say - does anyone have a photo of the bottom of the driver or passenger seat? To show the mounting?

Most later air cooled and then water cooled VWs (Super Beetle, Rabbits etc) use a 3 point mounting system - one center front point, and two sliding track points on the rear. Wondering if the 412 is the same, or different altogether.

It uses the same "method".....two points in the rails in the back....and one center riser in the front....but totally different parts.

Its the similar method as you note to early rabbits, Dasher ans some supers...but its just "similar". None of the parts and seats will interchange.

Thats being said...if you do not want to go through the hassle of rebuilding a type 4 seat...and you will have to sew it yourself.....or have it done...or Sewfine will make a pattern for about $400....and if you do that...let us know here and and on the Samba and I might go in on that...because once they make the pattern...the cost for a seat recover kit is about like any other VW.

Or....if you remove the seat...and flip it up...you can see that the seat bottom is kind of clipped/clamped or screwed onto the ssliding frame. I have been looking at simply Slaving on a Scat Procar 90 seat and back.

I was just curious - as when my new (Bill K's old) 412 arrives, I will likely install a bolstered drivers seat (Scheel or Recaro or something). I've made many custom Recaro bases before. That style of mounting is fairly straightfoward. The Dasher & B-chassis water cooled VWs and Audis are the same style, but dimensions are very off from the Rabbit & Golf and A-chassis cars. Likely similarly with the Type 4 vs. the watercooleds as you mention.

These are Hella H4's...135mm I think on the outside. Mine have a couple of chips but are totally functional. I would like to find a spare for the H4's. I also have spare for the inner par 46 HB-2's.

I think the H4's are 303 115 704 parts #. The par 46 high beams are part # 301-131-081 and also have a part # on the box of 1K3 004 929 01.
