My GL standard beetle & 2056 type 4 build (pix)

This is my 3.5 year long GL build with a 2056 Type 4:

In the beginning, towed the car from Phoenix to my parent's house in Wyoming and the final leg of our journey was a blizzard so the car was covered in road grime and snow. The car drove when I bought it and I had QUITE the adventure cruising it across Phoenix (broke about four things in 20 miles and car would not idle)

Engine ran. but not well...

Start of teardown, notice the nice couloration of the tint on the windows. Car came with a giant stuffed dog that was the same color...

Lots of cancer. Also take not of the fact that some rocket scientist used tin snips to cut out a DIN slot for a radio...

Pulled the body off, had it sandblasted but will have to edit in that pic later I cant find it.

Great job, nice work, Best of luck.

Keep away from EMPI floors they suck.

I you want to keep it stock fine, but go to my site to see what I did to my 73. Early head lights,I modified you bumpers by cutting the 1" impression out and over lapping the two pieces, Dechromed, Moved the Rear plate unit and filled the exhausts holes. Flat Tail lights. Early front head lights with signals in the lights and LED driving lights. Dropped front spindles. The rest is performance stuff.

Chassis being rebuilt with a few nicer touches by yours truly

Rolling chassis all done. I haven't switched to disk brakes yet, but will have four wheel disks in the Porsche pattern when its all said and done.

I needed some inspiration to keep sanding, so we "mocked up" the "car". I was like three months into body work and really was not seeing fast progress at all. It was long. It was boring. However, after I did finish I had the painter who is a super hardcore perfectionist and who has been painting cars for 35+ years tell me I did a darn good job, so well worth it! Shown with my Porsche cup wheels

Here I am posed by the car during body work. Creative car craft = 1.5" fenders in front and +3 in the back. Going to be wide but the fenders look GREAT!

Custom welded dash by yours truly. Has five gauge holes now and proper radio slot. Its also all smoothed out now and looking GOOD!

Mock up of the car right before it went in for paint! (its there as we speak should be done this upcoming week!) Going for a darker silver paint color that should make it look extremely nice. The reason we did the turn signals like that is I bought a cheesy "euro look" bumper that was made of aluminum foil or something. That just made me decide to modify my heavy duty stock bumpers to suit my purposes. Might go carbon fiber bumpers at some point down the road but will cross that bridge later.

This is a pic during teardown of type 4 core engine. Was a 2.0 liter bus engine. Also pictured is my partner in crime and co-pilot Molly. I love this dog she is super cool!

Posted this on my other thread, CRAZY shaped combustion chambers and a good bit of head leaks on my core heads! Strange no? This engine must have had 4.3:1 compression because it also had dished out pistons. Makes one wonder...

I can't believe you did all that since my last post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel stupid telling you what floors to get after seeing the finished chassis.

I used Creative Car Craft also, they are the best. OK did they send the fenders regular mail just in bubble wrap. I could not believe it! But the fenders came in fine.

OK are those dropped spindles. I have 2 1/2" drop with 4 wheel discs also, front and rear anti sway bars and KYB gas a just shocks.

I know the car will be done by my next post, Ha!!!! OK I am ready.

What speedo? Since it's a GL you *must* run something cool like a high speed VDO model like this one.

Nextgen, you snuck in there before I got all the pix up...I had to deal with a roommate situation mid-post. Your up to speed now though.

Haha it was a ROUGH day to get the car that far, very long and I had to drink about 14,000 Red Bulls to get going fast enough to get done

NextGen, those are stock spindles but will be going to the lowered versions during the disk brake conversion. As far as them shipping the fenders, to be honest its been so long I can't remember much about it but I do know they were shipped like FedEx or regular mail.

9.6:1 Compression
HAM prepared heads, 42x36 valves with some port work, flycut
96mm Keith Black pistons
Bored out stock cyls
Mallory Unilite/HyFire
DTM
A-1 Cali-style exhaust w/2.5 inch magnaflow (I know its a GL car, and this header does not really match the style but I really like the way a nice exhaust looks hanging out the back of a bug, I don't want it hidden)
Full flow oiling / external cooler
Dual IDF 44s

The car:
(a little of this is still in the planning stage but most of it is complete)
Porsche cup wheels
4 wheel disks
All urethane bushings
KYB gas shocks
Front and Rear sway bars
Modified factory front bumper and fabricated (by my dad and I) front and rear solid bumper mounts
Replaced heater channels,floor pans, and rear apron
Fixed a lot of cancer via wire feed welder
Corbeau Baja seats, mounts built by my dad and I
Roll bar, RJS racing 4-point seat belts
Dakota Digital CHT gauge, otherwise all autometer ultra-lights (Tach, oil temp, oil pressure, EGT from a hot-rodded diesel I used to drive, AFR)
^^^All mounted in custom smoothed out dash

I'm using the stock speedo, but its the late model vdo and I like the looks of it, plus it has fuel gauge built in
Alpine CD player, not sure what speakers yet but they will go in fiberglass kick panels

Well you may have been lurking, but in one post overloaded our hard drives,ha.

Serious nice work, the KYB and Front and rear sway bars make a big difference. Also be aware I have 2 1/2" wider fenders and can only go as wide as 196 tires in the front. Or the fender rub on turns.

That roof spoiler on the black car is interesting?? Where can you get that??

I wish that were my car, but then again half the fun is the building and customizing it. I do desperately want to drive my car but its nowhere near that stage.

As far as that spoiler on the roof goes I'm not too sure where you can get one. ^^^ That car is in Norway I think.

More car porn just for fun and to make sure I test people's internet connections.

Single HD valve springs, chromoly retainers, HD exhaust and rocker studs, flycut, ported, 42x36 valves

Case mostly cleaned up. Waiting on stuff to drill and tap threaded plugs/full flow and ill finish cleaning it after I'm done with that.

EDIT: This distrubutor is like a Great Dane. BIG! IN YOUR FACE! COOL! But on the inside has deep neurological issues and is very needy. (My girlfriend has a Dane, and I have a Unilite trust me on this

)

Re-polished and balanced crank, Re-bushed and fully balanced rods all done by Painters Grinding in Denver.

That's where I'm at as of now. Waiting on a HUGE parts order from Jake and I'll have this engine project really rolling in a couple weeks. Will post pics as I go along....

Where did that Mallory come from?
IIRC Jake won't sell them anymore cause they suck now...

I have one with over 3 degrees slop in just the drive tang and pin alone.

The Mallory came from John @ aircooled.net. It is my understanding he inspects all the ones he sells before they go out, and still has product support should one experience a problem. Mine seems to be just fine. Hopefully I don't eat those words down the road... Forgot to say, I read all of whats been going on with Mallory but because of what was my understanding with aircooled.net I went with the Unilite anyway. It was my decision and I completely consider it an informed one, just like EVERY consideration on this car, I have been reading the forums and anything I can get my hands on obsessively for two years now... Oh man.

Edit: I am chewing on this post right now, and hope I don't have to completely eat these words^^^^^^^
