I recently bought a laser 917 kit car. It doesn't have an engine. I'm considering putting a subaru watercooled engine in it. What kind of subaru engine would be best for this application? I want it to be street-able too, I don't plan on racing it...
I know I need somewhere to mount a radiator. I think one can fit at a 45 degree angle in front of the front beam behind the bumper area. I plan on running electric fans that would stay on when the engine is running to keep things cool.
Here's some pics if it helps.

Re: Possible subaru swap
With a body body like that, you need some serious power to back up those looks.
In this case, I’d recommend an LS swap. Probably evenba twin turbo LS swap.
Anything less than an LS would be kinda like powering a Camaro with a lawnmower engine.
That being said, I’m currently swapping a Subaru EJ251 into my Porsche 912. But my exterior is staying 100% stock.

I agree, that thing is screaming for a turbo subi conversion, plenty of room for ducting a rad up front with a thermo fan for backup

Re: Possible subaru swap
The original 917 cranked out about 1050 hp out of twin-turbo flat-12.
Just doesn't seem right building a 917 tribute with an engine not in the same league at least.
You've got plenty of room for a radiator up front, that 917 is begging for a twin-turbo LS.

Re: Possible subaru swap
That really does need an LS turbo swap, but it gets expensive having to upgrade the tranny for that kinda power.
A flat 6 subaru svx engine should sound amazing in that, and you can always add a turbo for some low boost down the line. They’re 200hp in stock format, and you could probably get 250-300hp with some mild boost.

Sorry to break this guys, but I decided to just buy a GEX 1914cc VW type 1 longblock.
I did buy a set of Dual HPMX carbs, 009 Dist, and Empi GT4 exhaust for this engine, so it should be peppy enough for traffic around here. Traffic is a pain in the you know what around here...
