Well I just bouoght a DTM with Kennedy flywheel and it came with a core "GA" 2.0 914 engine. It needs to be rebuilt but I don't want to go crazy with the rebuild since I will be getting a MASSIVE type 4 in a few years. I would like some tips on what to do to get the most HP per dollar spent. This is what I'm thinking so far.
1. Mallory dist.
2. KB pistons (forged or cast)?
3. 40mm dells ?
4. A-1 type 4 header!
5. ceramic lifters
6. cam...???
7. Balanced internals by RAT.
8. Heads???
Any Idea on HP. ???
Maybe should I go roller lifters.
Car specs.
approx. 1800 lbs.
near daily driver 4 days a week. ( nice weather)
No real racing action.
Big old heavy 18" rear rims. 39lbs. bare per rim.
I'd use it as a learning curve. This time around save the bucks and just buy a few really good things that won't wear and can be used later when we really hook you up.

125 EASY with somewhat flat torque around 135lbs..... Thats the set up in my 912E and even built with used parts it celebrated its 2nd birthday two weeks ago....
2 years and 61,000 miles! Hasn't had the valves adjusted since Bug Jam last year and it has 16,000 miles (and 210 of those were on a road course) on the same oil!
To jump off topic a little I think I'll need some taller gears . I have stock 1st and 2nd with 1.48 3rd and 0.89 4th with a 3.88 r/p. The tranny was already built ( by fisher buggies) with and aluminum side cover and a super diff but I think the gears will be too low for cruising up I-75 at 85mph. Rear tires are 80.5" in cir. or 25.6" diameter. What are your thoughts Jake.
Type IVs can LAWAYS benefit from taller gears. we have the torque to move them and not fry and at the same time we have the added cooling capability to keep from running hotter...
Read the pages on my site concerning transaxles.... You'll save enough on gas in one year of driving to buy my gearbox! several people have told me they did after driving for years with a stocker and the same engine....
We are specialist at creating matched engine/gearing combinations. Normal tranny shops don't recognize the capability of a TIV and they screw up the ratios... Have your tires preselected before we build you a tranny!
I read the website and it looks like I will need a "B" transaxle to meet my needs. Since my tranny is brand new could you replace what is needed to optimize the setup for my 2056. I could bring the tranny up to Toccoa if you have a way of getting it back to your shop. Let me know if you are interested.

looks like we're trying to build the same type of motor! i'm getting my jugs bored out by rimco next week when i go to LA. already bought my pistons from AC.net. not sure about the heads though. have some 2.0s, but not sure if i'll be going bigger anytime soon. i'm doing what jake said to do...chalk it up for learning. when comfortable i'll go BIG!

It will be a while before the engine is assembled. Now that I know what parts to get I can keep my eyes open for some good deals. It should be running in the spring some time.
i hear you on that! i think from here on out it's basically new parts. i was able to find 1.7l rockers from thesamba for $10 bucks or so. that's about it. not sure if i over paid on that too.
instead of dell 40s, i'm going to try and run my dell 45s. that's prolly the only difference perhaps between your build and mine.
