I have the body unbolted and was wondering what is the easiest way to lift the body up?
I have the glass out and thought about running some boards through the quarter window area and through the door opening and then hoist it up???
Removing the Body???

What I did was:
1. Pull motor, gas tank, seats, shifter
2. Disconnect starter cables, brake resevior lines, steering coupler
3. Unbolt pan
4. Get 3 friends and lift by bumpers -- it's heavy with glass, interior, fenders, etc, but doable (strip to shell and 2 guys can lift it).
5. Get another friend to place 4x4's under rear and front axle locations on top of saw horses (beefy ones), set it down.
6. Roll chassis out from under body.
A strong hoist could work too, good luck.

I have pulled the body off my '69 by myself.
I pretty much unbolted all the body bolts and disconnected all the electric stuff, brake stuff, and steering connections. Then I jacked the whole car up and placed on jack stands took out the remaining couple bolts. Then put saw horses in the wheel arches and lowered the pan away from the body.* I have some pics on how I did it on my website. Whether its right or safe enough...
It wasnt too bad... just got to be careful !!! You dont want to get crushed, or get something caught inbetween the body and pan!
* try at your own risk.

lifting the body
My son and I did mine. After pulling the engine and interior and made sure all the wires are disconnected, etc we lifted the ass end up with an engine hoist and strap and the we jacked the front end up with a floor jack.
We then slid jackstands under both ends and set it down on the stands. It was stable and did go anywhere.
We then slid the pan out from underneath. We took the wheels off and place a jak under that tranny and a sheet of plywood under the front suspension and just slid it sideways. Worked out just fine.
I then replaced the cander-eaten heater channel while I had the car in the air, as well as pan repairs, etc. You know, the usual stuff
Just make sure the car is stable once it is in the air.

i have seen many factory pictures of beetle bodies being moved around the factory with a set of "hooks" in the front and rear window openings. the cars had fenders doors and bumpers. so i think you would be safe with your idea just go slow. and have a friend around to help just in case you miss a hose or wire ect. good luck

After hemming and hawing over if/not I should unbolt to redo cars --- took the leap... now it's the only way to go.
How????
I picked up a $69 Harbor Freight 880# hoist. Attached it SECURELY to the ceiling joists (yes our joists are 2x12 FIR--can take the load)
Removed all everything and stripped the car clean... then logging chained through the entire roof area... it's then easy to move around.
Takes a bit of prep work -- the time is saved on later logistics of testing etc.
