Budget 100x71 Build
So I have a very high revving Type 4 project in the pipeline, but when trying to use the best this and that, you sometimes have to wait. My billet heads are in Sweden to get more porting and assembly, but Johannes won’t touch them till next year. I just finished my Type 1 project, so I’m kinda free.
For some time, I thought about making a small budget 100x71 engine, that’s kinda like the poor-man’s version of the future engine I’m building. Here’s the specs:
100 NOS Birals - $400
5.7L Hemi pistons - $160
2.0 core - $150
71 regrind, balance - $150
slightly used KEP 200mm flywheel, balanced - $125
AA 5.158” slightly used rods - $200
Eurorace P Cam - $125
AA straight cuts - $125
CB Ultralight lifters - already had for years
Maybe CB dry sump pump - bought a new one for $100
Stock pushrods, tapered, and with comp cams ends installed - $45
Either stock modified rockers and Thorsten adjusters, or some Weiss 1,4 rockers that I have - $800
AA 914 heads, ported by myself, and maybe finished by Anthony Chicca because he has a flow bench and can assemble after. $500 for castings
CSP space saver intakes for IDF - about $100
230HP would be nice. We'll see. It'll depend on my headwork.
Relatively inexpensive build. I'm doing most of the machining.

The flywheel weighs about 11 lbs now. Oh my compression will be around 11:1.

Oh, forgot the bore machining: lift is around .540" with 1.3s. I just scribed the lifter head diameter and added a couple mm. I machine the rockers to accept swivels w/o geometry issues. I may use these, or my Weiss rockers. Depends if I can get 1.6s for my other engine. I narrow mounting blocks to allow better valve alignment, and add friction-reducing shims. Oh, I make those solid spacers too.

that should be interesting . I like the 100mm bore . You don't have to remove so much material from the case and heads . Something I'd like to try and develop in the future is a lifter bush that takes an LS roller lifter . So it is a simple procedure to heat the case and press in , ready to go with no reeming .

It'd be nice as long as you respect the case's limitations. I don't think they're beefy enough as-is for any wild profiles and high spring pressures. on the LS lifter it has a flat surface that stops the lifter rotating . this fits in a plastic guide on the LS , worn plastic guides are actually big failure point on LS cams. I thought of a bush CNC'd with the flat section (Pushrod end) at the end of the bush . I wonder it an alloy vertical support that could also act as a windage tray could help support that part of the case .
I also would try running the same Beehive (LS) springs I have now . so spring pressure would be the same .

YEAH!!
With the machining you were doing to the wrist-pin area,
This was because the small end of the rod was too wide?
Piston guided rods?
When you narrow rocker blocks,
To get correct alignment of adjuster to valve tip,
Is it to get them over the center,
Or do you shoot for a certain offset to promote rotation?
Love it!

The distance between the bosses is about 1", whereas a T4 rod is wider. Can't remember the dimension, but I gave it about .080" wiggle room.Clatter wrote: ↑Mon Nov 30, 2020 5:50 pm YEAH!!

I still offset the adjusters on the stems, but now I can add shims on both ends. The set screws on the solid spacers prevent the left rocker's load from transferring to the right rocker.

You are not using the pistons that came with the Birals? (there in the picture).
I am also building a 100mm, I am using deutz and a bargain JE 100mm piston.
Also got a set QSP 100mm Nikasil look a likes. so could use a good option for a 100mm piston.
What are the head and case diameters for those Birals.
Ps the QSP are 103mm sizes 115 head and 108 case,
Machined the deutz to 113 head and 107 case for better support.
Keep the pics comming

104 case and 108 head, I believe. The pistons that come with it have huge rings, full contact skirts, and heavy pins. Not the best for power making at high rpm.

Finally got around to doing a set of rockers for myself. I've helped people all over the world with their valvetrains, but never had a set on a personal engine. I have a Pieper shipment on the way, so I'll use a set of the 8mm ones for these. It's almost mandatory to use carbide. I tried HSS the first time years ago, and it just dances on the surface. I use a pin to locate the center, go in with a 3/4, .060 R 6-flute, then a 4-flute full radius to dish it. Every oil hole is in a slightly different location, so you just eyeball it, and stop a few threads shy.
I have some Comp Cams 5/16" pushrod ends for 3/8" pushrod diameters coming in the mail. I'll taper the stock shortened aluminum pushrods to 3/8" diameter. The round ends will be a better match for the cam's high lift.

The heads and gears are in my possession now. I finally sat and did some math:
3,300,000×port dia×port dia/bore×bore×stroke=peak power
Engine capacity in ccs×peak power×bmep/910=theoretical power
Aiming for ~12,5 bmep so a 44mm valve with 88% port-valve diameter would net me 213,4 HP @ 6,968 rpm and 46mm with 88% would be 233,2 HP @ 7,616 rpm. Still kinda in the air about which way I'll go. Thinking I should err on the smaller side because I'd rather not weld on the heads to get my port diameter to the needed 40,5mm diameter. For the 44mm valve, I'd only need to port to 38,75mm to hit my target. I could split the difference and port to 89ish too to gain some more top end at the sacrifice of bottom end. Also, I can probably get by with a 42mm vent in my IDFs and be fine, whereas the bigger setup might need 44-46 vents. The stock port right now is about 36,5mm btw...

This may interest you . It's a shame JPM don't do DRLA or IDF venturi kits .
What I'm running at the moment . this flows about 220cfm per throat . With the stock secondary vent and a 42mm main vent , they flowed about 195cfm . ( Flowed by Dangerous Dave)
I'm guessing an IDF would be much the same . A friend has done the same with his 48IDF's The nozzles are just 5mm OD tube with a copper washer soldered on the end with a shoulder for the O ring . My friend made his from an old push rod .
The issue is getting the main jet to start early enough with a lean idle jet . Mine is acceptable . cruise is in the 16's
What I'm running at the moment . this flows about 220cfm per throat . With the stock secondary vent and a 42mm main vent , they flowed about 195cfm . ( Flowed by Dangerous Dave)
