914 1.7 to a 2.0 (VW)

Post by PTP »

Hello All!

I'm new to this forum and I have a 1970, 1.7L, 914. The engine needs quite a bit of work and I'm considering to replace it by a 2.0, from a vintage VW.

Would you say that such engine would work/fit in the 914? Are they visually alike? Would there be the need of a great adaption in the car?

Thank you in advance!

Its not what you want.

The 1.7L from a VW 411 or 412.....was 100% identical to the 1.7L in the 914... down to the last part number, specification and power output. The 1.8L from a VW 412....likewise.....was identical in every way to the 1.8L in the 914. Same exact engines in the VW type 4 cars...as the 914. The only differences being a few sheet metal parts snd the exhaust manifolds.

However.....the 1.7L, 1.8L and 2.0L engines that came in the VW bus.....and the VW bus is the ONLY "vintage VW" that had a 2.0L engine......were GREATLY detuned.

The 1.7L and 1.8L in the bus...while they are the same head castings, case castings, crank and rods as the 1.7L.and 1.8L of the 411, 412 and 914.....they had different pistons, different cam, lower compression and lower HP. They were made for a low geared bus.....not for the higj gear ratios and lower weights of the 411/412/914 cars.

Likewise....and even worse in the detuning....the 2.0 bus engine...while it used the exact same engine case casting, crankshaft and rods......had totally different heads, pistons, camshaft, compression......and is nowhere near what you want in a o14 or type 4 car.

In fact....I can spank a bus 2.0L engine in a 914....with the 1.7L in my 412. It will allow you to roll around but with your gears.....it will be a miserable hot running dog with poor fuel mileage.

By the way.....you can rebuild the 1.7L....and tune it well espcially with the stock injection.....and you should be able to make about 5 hp better than the 1.8L. Ray

A bit late, but a minor bit of info---
The 1.7 heads from a 914 ot 41x will almost certainly be in better shape than the heads off a bus, and likely be worth rebuilding.
Many>most bus heads are not.
They also flow decently, even though they have the same sized valves as the 2L bus heads, the 1.7 intake port flows better.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I think the 914 rods were much lighter than the bus rods, despite the parts number similarity. I once tore down a 2.0 and marked all the rod weights before taking them into my local FLAPS to get them rebuilt. What I got back were 20-25 grams heavier all around, turned that 2.0 into a dog. (The 1.8 heads didn't help with that any though.)
