my lifted bus build

so I figured this deserves one solid thread. I stared out with a 77 westy, my first car....

ok, i'll fill the damn story in later, how the F#%^ do you get a stubborn torsion bar back in? I have had it in once before, but now the inner splines REFUSE to go in. I am afeared to hit it w/ a hammer, and I can only wiggle so much till my back hurts again. tips tricks potions? I am all ears.

EDIT: as of 2012, this old girl is dead. I am updating this post while replying to emails about parting her out. The frames rotted through (again) and I can't weld them up (any more) so it is time to let her go. in fact the torsion housing snapped clean in half! screw you too new england. Anyways the thing was a beast, and will be sorely missed. I am transplanting alot of the custom and exciting stuff over to a new chasssis, so be ready for round two.

Take it out and clean all the junk out of the splines. She'll slip right in... If that doesn't work, clean the splines inside the torsion tube. BTW, it only goes in one way.

I had to install it on the spring plate to be sure, but I am sticking it in the right way, I also cleaned the splines, but every time i pull it out its dirty again, and I don't think I fit in the tube. maybe I need one of them skinny russian girls to go stick an arm in there.

When I pulled mine out it was all dirty too... wait, never mind. I think there was some kind of goo put on the inner splines to hold it in so Hans could index the outer.

He needs NLW for pics....hmmmm...she's slender, how 'bout sticking HER arm in the tube to clean it out? Though, if you do find any of those Russian women, you need to do another road trip so they can help me clean my torsion tube.

Wow, that sounded more inappropriate than I thought it would.

So the westy is gonna become the next off road beast? What about the rail? And the buggy? Going to be a street beast?

It always took a little gentle persuasion for me, put a slab of wood between the spring and hammer. A couple a light taps should send it on it's way. On the other hand, pulling them has been a problem before, I've had to wrap a chain around the big end and yank on it to get the torsion spring free.

so my buggy wasn't just beign weird. all the torsion tubes and spring plates came off super easy on my bus. when I did my buggy one inner spline was stuck, took NLW dad like half an hour to convince it to come out, and on the other side the spring plate was stuck, and I never actually seperated the two.

bus: offroad toy this summer, parted out spring time
rail: sleeping till jan, when the laws should change and I can title it
buggy: Title issues as well, but street machine w/ big honking engine
