I was going to grab my huge allen wrenches so i could drain the trans oil, but then i didnt! Have to try again tomorrow.
You will have to pull the drum, backing plate, axle bearing, unbolt the axle tube from the spring plate, small flange that the axle boot clamps to, beneath that will be a circlip that holds the retaining ring that holds the spider gear, fulcrum plates and axle. 15 minutes of work for you buguyImage

I'm on it dude. It's in the air and ready to drain. I watched a vid on it and have the tools out and ready to go. Just hope i can get the tube out with it in the car. The horns are right there in the way. But at least should be able to move it far enough out to get the bearing off and see if half of an axle comes out!

Keep track of how many paper shims are in between the flange and the side plate it will help you set it back up. If the axle is broke once you pull the 4 backing plate/bearing retainer flange bolts you should be able to pull the axle out if its broke

You need to pull the whole transmission...... Something broke.
You will be fighting the fulcrum plates if you can't hold the axle shaft vertical when you try to install them. They will fall in and you will have to pull everything apart to get them back out to put them in place.
With your skinny tires I doubt you have enough traction to break an axle but I could be wrong.
My guess is you stripped your spiders and possibly the gears that hold the spade and run on the spiders. Those pieces will be in the bottom of the differential and if you don't clean it really good you will toast your ring and pinion too.....If you didn't already.

Yeah clone, i figured if i broke something inside it will be apparent when i drain it. I really don't have a problem pulling everything out, just need to know if i need to order axles or not.
After watching that video i think your right. That dude had trouble with the fulcrum plates when it was upright.

Hummm. Trans oil looked fine. In fact it looked oddly good. I don't recall changing it recently, but maybe i did? No metal shavings that i saw, and nothing but a little sludge on the magnet. The wife wants me to take her out for dinner, so no tearing it down tonight.

Looks like you guys were right. I took the bearing retainer off and the axle didn't come out. Wouldn't move back and fourth at all. Guess the trans let go. Much work ahead of me.

It may have, but that wouldn't let the axle spin free in gear.

If one is off the ground it should be able to spin free I think. You have an open diff. My bet is still on spider gears, or the side gear that the axle is stuck in that interfaces with the spiders.

Not that free!
Maybe once it's out i will pull it apart to see what happened. It's a 6v swing, no one wants it anyway!

You said you have a KCR transmission......Jerk out the old one and put the new one in.....
If you are putting out the hp you will be finding the next weakest link.
I'm thinking a trans with welded 3rd and 4th syncros and a super diff should put the power to the ground if you don't do clutch drops.
Time will tell.

Well the problem is i had a plan and will probably stick to it. I intended to blast the bottom of the car and spray bed liner on it while the engine and trans were out. That means i have to pull the fuel lines and the water lines, radiator and fan etc.... I also planned to replace all the brake lines while I'm under it. I'm going to remove my apron and make it removable too. Then give the whole car a fresh paint job. Probably will be down for a month or so for all that.
