2019 1915cc Turbo Upgrade

Post by FullFender »

I made a post not too long ago about a custom turbo housing but I figured I might aswell start and a 'build' thread. There was a bit of a mishap on my order last saturday on their end so I got it reordered Thursday and he was able to get it here pretty quick! It fits darn good! The casting is a little here and there, some scratches and grind marks, but nothing that causes any concern. I also picked some tubing to make my oil drain, since there is no carbon seal available I went nice and big, 1/2" :D

Looks good. Although 1/2" isn't really considered big. Most of us here run 5/8" drains.

From what I have read a Holset requires a 3/4 inch drain

Progress has been slow this weekend as I found some split buses that need saving lol so all I had time to do was make the oil drain (5/8" wasnt available so I went 3/4, shouldnt have a problem draining  :D My flanges arrived. Next up Im gonna get some 45* pipe, im going to have to get creative with this header to fit the compressor housing, which means a different carb support. Its like a snowball

Through buying 3 more rigs and then selling 2, plus taking my Bus down the coast I havent had much time to work on this new setup. I threw the old kit back on to hopefully hit a few shows this summer but I had the damnedest time trying to figure out why I couldnt get my clutch adjusted well. I backed out of my garage and had almost zero clutch pedal freeplay + wouldnt get into reverse. I pulled the motor to find the Stage 1 Kennedy PP was jacked up! Not sure what went wrong, I'll have a look at it later & pics will follow. While ive got the motor out I figured I will make up a header if nothing else, that should be finished this weekend. I dont have much progress in yet but im giddy to be back working on it. Ive got the turbo mocked up where i want it and a new T3 inlet flange with some tubing welded to it to mate the header and turbo.

When you said "taking the bus down the coast"........does that mean you were in the Treffen cruise from Washington to California??? If so.....we must have met you since we were the white buggy heading north on the 101 north of Tillamook and around Wheeler, Or.
We saw lot's of VW's heading south.

I was thinking the same!
I follow a guy called Stav Tech. He’s very knowledgeable on turbos and his knowledge is gained through experience rather than theory.
He says he’s seen noticeable performance increases when using intake trumpets on turbo inlets....... In fact, his advice is to have the biggest inlet you can possibly squeeze into your application.

Trumpets are great but hard to filter over them isn’t it?
I’ve seen similar results from people too on drag cars (Leroy on YouTube that twin turbo beast)
But sadly with a lot of us our turbos are outside the engine bay in the “dirty” areas :(
Would be ace to make a big air box and massive filter suratace area but we’re short on space really....

I would agree with you guys however this is going to be a draw thru setup...not sure if i said that already  It isnt ideal but my intake is only 2"...until I get a larger Holley or Fitech/Sniper. As for the size, it is a Holset Hx35 with a machined T3 turbine housing for quicker spool. Itll restrict top end but given that top end for this turbo is 5**hp I am not too worried. Down the line if I still want quicker spool, I can get it rebuilt with a smaller turbine wheel altogether. IF youre wondering why not just buy one that is already a good size, I am only in this turbo about $90. Making it the perfect turbo! Clone..I was not apart of that cruise in fact I left on August 2nd, I think a good bit after you guys left?? We took 101 then 1 all the way to Pismo. It gets hairy along the coast on 1 in Oregon. I had to pull over a few times because of brake fade.

Got the header finished and am starting to mock up some braces for the intake and exhaust side...
