It depends on how you mount the gearbox. If you mount it really low, the engine will be low.
Let's say you mount it so that the output flanges are at the same height as a VW.
The R&P of a Subaru has a 30mm hypoid offset. This means the pinion shaft will be 30mm higher than a VW.
Then, adding to that, the shaft spacing of a Subaru is 75mm, vs VW's 65.65mm.
Adding the two, the input shaft of a suby is 40mm higher than a VW if the output flanges are in the same spot.
Stated otherwise: A VW input shaft is 65.65mm above the center of the diff. A Suby's input shaft is 105mm above the center of the diff.
