Porsche front brake conversion - ball joint idea
Hello,
I would like to share the modification I am working on now for the Porsche 944T brakes conversion. I saw Mikesboxerservice that on the Luftwaffe he is not using the Kerscher ball joints. After some e-mail exchange, Mike told me he is using 80's Passat ball joints, trimmed a bit to fit.
Here is a pic, but not a lot of details can be seen. I bought some Passat ball joints, but I ordered the wrong parts. There are two versions: "normal" ball joints that have a straight foot, and power steering version with offset ball joint. Well, I ordered the latter. Now I also got a set of correct ball joints. They are also used on some 80's Audis. Here are some pics of what the plan is. I will take some pictures of the new ball joints in the following days.
Any inputs are welcome.

Pics will follow in the following days. I cut the ball joint support on the original arm and I grinded a bit on the ball joint to make it fit. I still have to adjust the arm a bit. However, I shortened the ball joint fixation lip too much, but hey, that's how you learn.

Pics! This is what I could do until now: cut the original ball joint support, grind the arm to accomodate the new ball joint, shortened the ball joint (too much! I need to buy another set, picture 4), grind the ball joint a bit on the sides to fit between the arm reinforcement. I still have to grind the arm a bit more (fine tuning) for a better fitment. There is a small gap between the ball joint boot and the fixation lip, so I want that to fit snug on the arm, where the original bj went (I can't explain properly, hope you can make it out of the last two pictures).

Some progress here. I modified both track arms and I bought a new set of ball joint for ~15 bucks a pair (I cut off too much of one from the first set). I had to grind a bit from both sides to make them fit in the arm slot, cut from the furthest hole and drill another one.

Any updates on this? Can I see closer pics? Were you able to use the holes already in the ball joint, or did you need to drill a new hole? Are the LCAs currently in use? Any issues? Did you use a backing plate on the opposite side of the LCA from the ball joint?
Edit: I see you did not use a backing plate. Would you recommend one?

Nothing new here. I am waiting to raise enough money to buy a Kerscher front suspension, most probably next month, then I will install everything.

Hehe, same here. Lots of rain and no garage. I forgot about this topic and posted pictures in my other topic (944t brakes...). It works very well.

TZ, did you have to clearance the bottom end of your struts for this mod?
