Lord Bajamungus build

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Re: Lord Bajamungus build - 019 installed

Post by kyle_pc_75 »

After a week or so of fiddling around, I've settled on about 29' total advance, which drops it to about 11' at idle. It runs awesome; it's hard to believe it's the same engine I started with. The only temp gauge I have is oil temp, so I'll keep an eye on that. Plan on a 15 mile mountain road at highway speeds next weekend when my buddies are around (just in case) ;) .

Next is dialing in the Zenith, but I'm not sure how I'll do that without an A/F gauge as it's running so well as is. I'll probably pull the plugs in a few hundred miles and keep an eye on fuel consumption.

Thanks for all the input so far, guys, it's really coming together!

That's good to hear Kyle, and at 29 degrees you should be fine as long as the cooling system is doing it's job.
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

Well, now it's running like crap. It's idles fine and when you mash it it goes well, but cruising and WOT it stumbles and misses. I'm frustrated right now, time to have a finger of Tequila and chill.

Been playing with the Zenith in this other thread:

http://shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=127665

but for simplicity's sake, I'll keep the discussion in my build thread right here from now on.

Saturday, I'm going through the entire fuel and ignition system...it just doesn't feel like a carb issue. Could be after so much messing around my plugs are fouled, or I have a plugged fuel filter AGAIN....I should put in a new tank.

Wish me luck...summer's coming and I need my Baja!

Got the engine pretty well dialed in...at least good enough to drive around the desert and have fun in. :) "Fixed" the holes in the passenger floor with a piece of a metal filing cabinet door. It looks about as nice as the "No Parking" sign that is "fixing" the other holes.

Anyway, I'm ready for the B.O.R. race in Wendover, NV this coming weekend. Can't wait!

1966bajabug gave me a crapload of stickers for the car, so I was gonna put them on. That turned into a project, believe it or not. I cleaned off the rear quarter and noticed a few rust bubbles under the molding strip. Decided "it's a Baja, don't need no stinkin' chrome" so I ripped the strips off and decided to fix the little rust spots. Had to weld the holes closed, grind them down, fill the low spots with body filler, sand them down, paint the panels. All for a beat up car that I'm gonna plaster with stickers.

Anyway, I'm about ready to paint them with a rattle can yellow that I know damn well doesn't match the rest of the car, clear coat and sticker up! I'll take pics when the carnage is over in a few days.

Picked this up for a few dollars. Needs ball joints and all that stuff, but it's very solid. Now I have to get better stuff for the rear. Probably wait until Fall to install it.

Oh, you would have to ask. Let's just say it starts with Three and ends with Hundred. I have a sickness for Thing beams. I could've gotten it cheaper by trading for some cash and my T1 beam, but I didn't want to pull my car apart yet. On the bright side, he's got the rear setup as well he's going to sell pretty cheap.
