along the edges of the pan is where a lot of people run them. use the same ID piping as the engine water connections. you can use steel exhaust piping. I did. It's aluminized on the outside... aluminum coated. It's cheaper and almost as good as stainless. Which means you take your car down to the local exhaust shop and have them bend up the pipes to fit with the car on the hoist. Do it before you pull the VW motor out.

I ran hardline down to the horns and then 1" hose down the middle of the pan along either side of the tunnel. I used pipe hangers form the hardware store wrapped in friction tape that I just riveted to the pan and tunnel. I got the idea from the 914 guys that go water cooled. It's how I did the 914 and bug, both of wich are pretty low cars and have never had an issue.

Re: Carb'd EJ22 into 61 rag
Ok, I've been scouring the internet, but I can't find the info I need. Does anyone know if the EJ251 Subaru (2.5 SOHC) shares similar external dimensions with the EJ22? Mainly concerned with width of the engine at the valve covers, as the heads on EJ251 look different.
Just wondering if the 2.5 SOHC would fit into a bug as nicely as the EJ22 (i.e. with no cutting of the body).

Nope, I have a 2.5 sohc in my oval and it does not fit without cutting. It does not extend out past the decklid seal like a dual cam but you have to trim quite a bit. The other option is the 2.2 heads on the 2.5 block. I have read it makes like a 11 to 1 compression ratio, great for a NA street engine and fits the same as the 2.2!

Good to know. I'll have to look into the head swap. Is there a special timing belt for the head swap, or do you just use the regular 2.2 belt? I wonder if the 2.5 timing tensioner/idlers are laid out the same?

Single side irs box with a keyed early mainshaft, ftc 3+4 and a 3.88 with stock diff. We are running a stage 1 plate and a stock disc. I can't believe it has held together but I really think the clutch is what saves it.

i'm in awe of your conversion. A true insipration.. U mentioned earlier sum people using a dizzy for spark. Can u tell which dizzy was used? I really admire your intent to produce a kit and honestly i would really love to support the initiative; but currently funds are low; so I would have to go for the dizzy for now. Keep up the good work. Cheers!

Re: Carb'd EJ22 into 61 rag
I have only seen pics of a distributor setup but if I remember it was driven off the back of the cam on passenger side (in a bug). The radiator is a small honda civic ebay special with a mercedes pusher fan. The car is not actually mine, I did the conversion for a close friend. He was driving it to work fairly often (90 miles one way) but since we put the shorter gearbox in it has become more of just a weekend car. I just finished up putting a narrowed beam and disk brake dropped spildles on it so It is alot nicer to drive now also. I really want to try to run an 11 in it. I think I can make the power with the nitrous but I dont know if the gearbox is tall enough to allow the trap speed it would need. I was allready on the limiter in fourth trapping 105 but I think the motor will survive 500 more rpm's.

The guys that convert these engines for airplane use seem to use a distributor from an early Ford Escort, like in this link (scroll halfway down):
http://www.prachapter34.com/converting_engines.htm
It mounts off of the driver's side cylinder head (if it were sitting in a VW). I think some South American market Subarus also used a similar setup.

Re: Carb'd EJ22 into 61 rag
Sorry, my e-mail must've thrown it in the spam folder before I found it. I ended up marking the trigger wheel and the damper and taking it to a friend at a local machine shop. They ground down the weld, pressed the wheel off, rotated it 90 degrees and re-welded it. Just an honest mistake, no big deal. We now have the required 9 teeth difference at TDC.55superbeetle wrote:Mooseman, did you recieve my email about the trigger wheel ? I never heard back from you.
Finished up the electrical and cooling system yesterday, and filled the cooling system today. No leaks! I just need to rebuild my carbs and then we'll be ready to fire it up. Hoping for Saturday or Sunday. 2 weeks to the Vegas Bugorama, I know I'll have it running by then. Won't be able to really abuse it, though (stock trans).
