This might sound daft.. But!! small valves on a 2.1 DJ

I should be getting a nice pair of virtually new 1.9 DF heads, the 60bhp engine we had in Europe that has peak power about 3700rpm with smaller valves (in 35.5, ex 30) and a small solex 34 pict.. (26mm venturi)

Now..What do you recon I would end up slapping them on a 2.1 DJ spec (10.5cr) engine running the 1.9 DG (78bhp) twin choke (22mm/26mm venturi's IIRC) carb and manifold..
The 2.1 DJ spec engine runs really well as a "DG".. good torque and revs quite well too.. but I have a problem with one of the heads (dont know which one) on the engine in my Caravelle and dont have a good pair of heads ready to swap on.. I was thinking, drop these DF heads on so I can get it back from France and really as a sort of experiment to see what it behaves like...

My expectation is lots of torque from idle and run out of puff after 4 - 4.5k, maybe a bit more.... But considering its got quite tall gearing, it ought to be ok on the road... (60mph is about 3000)

What do you think???

Well, as long as it pulls to 4k ish.. it will be fine to get it home and run around until I can sort a couple of heads out.. I dont mind "wasting" the seals to do this if it runs reasonable..

Si, the expensive seals are the rubber water jacket channel seals (over $20 ea.), and they can be reused as long as they're still supple. At the low mileages you're anticipating they will still be good as new. I've reused them on my own engines with over 40k miles on them, and having been taken apart a couple times in that span of time (meaning the seals have been reused about three times since new). When you have them off, peel off any excess bead of sealant stuck to their edges, and reseal as if they are new, always using sealant sparingly and on both sides of the channel seal. If you bend the seals over backward and they show any small cracks starting along the edges then it's time for new ones.

The green silicone o-rings on cyl tops are also usually good to reuse if the miles or years are low, but they are so cheap you might as well get new. The black cyl base o-rings don't fare as well, but same thing, they're cheap.

It's only the metal combustion seal that positively must be replaced every time a head comes off, they crush to fit so are one use only. The others are age-dependent.

Don't know if ordering stateside is practical for you but GoWestyAutoparts.com lists all of these separately at good prices, also be sure to get the good Reinz steel-backed exhaust flange gaskets while you're there, best price.

If it doesnt stay together very long I'll reuse some...
I've used a few VR ones.. seem (seemed, havent used any for a bit) to be good quality..

Have to do a bit of searching for individuals...

Will have a look at GW, but postage, VAT and import duty might put the price out...

Any ideas if the green seals are something special? would think they are just something high temp resistant.. Prob not Viton as thats rather nasty once burnt (creats hydrofluric acid.. not nice...)

I'm pretty sure they are viton. Might be worth looking to see if the base seals are available in viton as well.
Just don't set `em on fire and they'll be fine
