The POS is a goer once more..... But....

With Turbo and Super charging you can create massive horsepower with vw motors.

It shipped out of the US on Monday..... So I might find it in my mail box this time next week.... But don't count on it!

I know I may be a little late for this party, but have you considered just useing a stock mechanical fuel pump? I know jack about side drafts, but my stock 40 year old pump feeds my 1600 turbo with a 4bbl Holley without any modifications or trouble?

Finally gave up on the FPR from the US ever arriving.... The seller is attempting to get a refund sorted for me via the postal insurance.... I don't hold out much hope....

So I went down to my local V8 performance shop and ordered the 13301 FPR..... It took 2 days to arrive and only cost me 40 bux more than the US one..... But since I'm still out of pocket on the US one, I'm in the hole on this project in a major way.....

Racing aint cheap!

So here it is.....

Image

Started fitting it up a couple of days ago.... Just finished it off this arvo.... Turned the key, checked for pressure and leaks.... No leaks spotted and pressure turned down to 2.5psi with ease..... Then fired up the beast..... She goes!..... Pressure is rock solid, AFR's are a little erratic, jetting needs some work.... Still waiting on some more weber gear to arrive from Queensland.... Need to organise a permit to drive for next weekend, then its time for a little road tuning.... Only option I have really.... No one here in Perth knows anything about dyno tuning carb'ed engines let alone turbo'd VW's!

Did some more work on the ignition last night.... Noticed the sensor and timing wheel relationship didn't look right.... It was out of whack for some reason.... Also made a couple of minor changes.... moved the wheel further away from the BERG pulley, and spaced out the sensor accordingly.... Also re-routed the sensor wiring away from the alt base and the other ignition leads.... Right away the car started better and idled nicely at 1000rpm... Hasn't managed that in 18months of fiddling!!!!!

So I took the car to the track today.... The Nostalgia drags were on and I wasn't gonna miss this year!

The car started real nice this morning before I loaded it on the trailer... Real sweet and crisp.... Idled nicely.... Just like last night....

Got it to the track and it started to run poorly again.... Draw-through turbo engines don't like idling much.... They tend to kill spark plugs... Changed out the plugs as I felt this was the problem.... Was correct in this thinking.... Right on start up the car ran very nicely.... Took it for a blat....

Got held up at the staging as a car from the previous run had a failure..... The POS began run rough from idling too long..... Gave it a lung full... Cleaned it out.... Staged against a mate in a IDA fed 2276 Oval.... Tore out of the gate (easy 4000rpm launch).... Had him for the first 100 or so, then my car began to stall at higher rpm, just as boost began to rise.... Then my mate flew past me and posted an awesome 13.5.... Me.... 15.9. Crying or Very sad

So I had a theory.... I reckon the POS is running out of fuel as boost builds.... Noticed the O2 gauge reading very lean at the moment of stalling.... I figured that if I ran a larger main, the car should stall sooner.... Back in the pit I fit a full step larger main to test my theory.... It worked... The car ran nicely once more (better even!) out of the gate, but broke down earlier.... I reckon the float bowl is being sucked dry by the turbo.... I need to run a boost referenced FPR to sort this issue (my Aeromotive FPR has this facility built in).... I reckon that's the fix for this issue.... Everything else went very well.... My shakedown passes are finally telling me I'm heading in the right direction.... Car launches well, goes straight.

So that's next then?.... Setup the O2 to data log with my ignition, setup the FPR to boost reference, then its back to the track.

Yea you need to refrence that regulator specialy running 2.5# at idle. If you are running to fat at idle causing plugs to foul you hav a problem. What size are your idles now? What is your float level? And what size needle and seat do you have?

What I have in the 45 now....

225 Needle'n'Seat (cant get a 250 locally)
175 mains (I had 165's in the yesterday morning)
180 airs
55f8 idles (I have some 45's)
45 pumpjets (I think?)
34 vents (I have some 32's)
Tapered E tubes

I didn't run the referenced FPR to start as I had to see how it worked without it.... You know how it is... All the information that I have been getting... Awesome as it is, has been full of conflicting views....
So I figured it best to start with a solid base ans work it out.... Your advise Shagg has been the most helpful.... Can't thank you enough.....

Your jets are set up more on the rich side. On most 1914s i use 45 idles to start but 50s somtimes. F11 e tubes tapered only on big boy motors. 190-200 airs and 150-165 mains. Squirters are to sinsative to guess they are for fine tuning after the rest is done just to get rid of the of idle stumble. 225 n+s ok for 300hp

I think I have some (borrowed) F11's, so I'll throw those and the 165 Mains 45F8 idles at it tonight....

I only had F7's, so I thought I'd try those.... Fitted the 165 mains and the 180 airs.... Right away the cars idle was a little patchy.... Hard to get a nice constant idle.... Fitted the 45F8's in there to try and clean it up... The engine began to really lope.... Adjusted the mixture screws a little more... 1.5 turns out seem to tidy it up.... Still not perfect.... Fitted some 50F8's.... A little rich now..... Hmmm..... Fitted the reference port up.... 'T'ed off the waste gate line.... Fuel pressure dropped a heap... Adjusted it up and managed to get a reasonable pressure, not constant at idle... As the idles moves around (too rich and afr's from rich to lean), the pressure does also.... As engine speed drops, gauge goes to low vacuum, the pressure drops too low, as idle lifts, pressure does also....

Think I need to try a check valve in the reference line.... Hopefully by doing this, the pressure will be more constant and I will then be able to get the jetting a little better....

Fun times....

F7s no! Get in touch with Rod Penrose he can get you dome f11s Find or open up airs to 190. The webber runs richer then a Dell so bigger airs are in order.
Yes use check valve in line.

Yeah I figured as much..... I have some F11's on the way.... Funny you should mention Rodney.... I was just chatting with him earlier today!
I have some 185 and 190 airs here already.... As for the check valve.... I know you guys with the holley style fpr have talked about the small slot/vent in the top chamber, and the need for this to be there.... The Aeromotive does not have such an aperture... Should a small vent be drilled into the housing to add this feature, or is not truly necessary?

Isn't the Aeromotive already set up to be referenced?? If so, I'd leave it alone.
