Name That Tool

I have been given a fair sized box of tools that an uncle wanted to unload on me. In this box there's ONE tool I am completely unfamiliar with. Any ideas Guys?

Maybe it's a puller to remove the bearings from the front beam.
What is the diameter?

I'm not dreaming that this is a VW specific tool either...Too big for a front beam. It's almost exactly 3" in diameter and 5.5-6" long according to how it's adjusted.... can be longer I guess also. It has something that looks like a "cutter" or something on the top opposite the "cut-out" (small bolt bit). The "cutter" also swivels in and out of the diameter of the tool, a little. It has an adjustable sliding layer under the top on the other bolt (The smaller bolt on the side). Maybe I should get a better picture of that part too... I thought it would be a press or a puller too, except for that one part has me stumped. It obviously goes inside something and locks down using the spring wrapped wings at the bottom part. I could be completely wrong in my assumption on that also..... Another look here....

A guess is that it looks a little like a ring ridge remover but not sure. If the base expands to lock it in the cylinder bore, and the cutter at the top slides out, it just might be one. There are several different styles of them out there.

Could be. I figured out from playing with this thing, that the threads on the center screw are left handed. There is another screw down the center of it, that's right handed, to tighten it into a bore. I suspect, if it is a ring ridge remover, the cut-out spots would be to insert a gauge to measure the cut? The cutter part is on a cam, that you can turn the screw head either way and it goes in and out of the side. It moves rather freely, so it almost doesn't make sense to me.... I'll look around on the Interweb thingy and see if I can find another.... and ID it with the thought it could be a ring ridge cutter.

First returned item showed a picture almost exactly like this tool. Thanks Lee. This is what you thought it might be, A Ring Ridge Cutter/remover tool. Now.... how to use it properly...

That would be my guess also...

Lower portion, with the three wide expanding "feet" (wedges) expand to lock tool centered in cylinder ... Section opposite notch (bolt/clamp) area of top "wheel" is where a cutter/scraper blade (tool) is mounted and it is set against ridge and whole top section is turned to "scrape" ridge of cylinder.... Bolt in slot adjusts tool in/out to "reach" cylinder wall...Was probably designed to do 6 cylinders and V8 blocks doubt seriously it was for VW cylinders (although)....

Look on internet for ZIM Ridge Reamer..... or KD Tools 2389 Engine Cylinder Ridge Reamer

About 1/3 way down page shows one in use...

And no I have not see one like that before in my life, but once its use is determined its pretty easy to do a kinematic study on how it functions...

I thought you might be interested, this is my second or third reamer and is unused. It is so old that the glue on the box has taken a dump.

I am pretty sure this is over 20 years old and may even be older than 30 (or may not) as I just don’t remember now when I got it.

The is ‘er! The wrench is for the two nuts on the top (I could take another pix if you want) and the instructions are still folded up in the bottom.

A word of warning, these things can grow legs and run on you. They are very good at hiding and may take on another master so you could never prove it was yours. Nasty little things.

I think yours, if it is a reamer, is of better quality than mine as it looks to sit lower in the bore but unless the post is really solid and you don’t try to take too much of a “bite” at one time, you should be OK.

Thanks for that last Tidbit, Lee.

I'm such a tightwad on specialty tools, this will never leave my garage. It may hide well,.... but will never get a new master unless I die.

Thanks folks for playing "Name that Tool". I now know more about it and have located a "how to" for it's use, and will now copy and print so I can attach it to the tool.

I have two more tools that were not in that bunch, that are tools of question too.... I have some "HomeMade ones in the mix too.... Those are the fun ones to ID. I can understand uses for most but this one was pretty substantial for me to NOT know what it was.
