Safeguard was the Intercepter model iirc (Edit: no, its the Vampire model), as I use an ecu with ignition control, set to wasted spark in this case, so it doesn't replace anything, it just is a connection between the coils that you install. Its been a while since I ordered the unit, so I suppose you better contact him for pricing. Nice guy, knows his sh*t too. Let me tell you, in any case its far far cheaper then any engine damage of any kind that knock can (and will) do to your engine. As I now run with cast pistons again, I feel it is especially important to have knock control as I will probably want to go to the edge of tuning since it is a competition after all

Here you see the regular Bosch knock sensor placed on one of the case bolts, very simple.

Tnx H, yeah, I think with the current fuel prices this was a project I was thinking about much longer already: why not downsize and use turbo technology and modern fuel and ignition management to give power and milage? Sort of like the downsizing as in the direction of current developments in the automotive industry (well, we're running behind again, but you get the idea).
Thats also why the CR is relatively high, especially with the short duration cam I'am using.

The crank has been polished and heat treated, same treatment as my stock non-counterweighted T4 crank got, so I have good experience with that and should stiffen the crank up a bit, which I can use with this thing. Its not nitrading, but much like a carbonization iirc. And yes, also balanced of course, seperate and together with flywheel and pressure plate, you know the drill I suppose

Yes i was expecting a "package" dynamical balance, but you not mentioned it earlyer (i think) so i have wondered.
Wally 1 more question. My friend works for the place that treats metals for aviation purposes. He said he can do some things for, me and since he has few precision kilns (ovens) for hardening metals, would you know or could reference place where i can get detailed information. I understand it is important to heat treat the crank after polishing, since it creates thermal distortion right?

Wally,
I have a single channel J&S that I used in the past. I'm now running direct fire so I can't use the safeguard directly. What I'm going to do is "trigger" the safeguard with my tacometer trigger, and log the signal that normally went to my J&S gauge as an aux in to my ECU. It won't be automatic on pulling timing, but I will still have the J&S dash gauge, and I can see the knockout->aux in in my datalogs. Once I figure the profile/curve of the voltage vs knock I can make a map to pull timing. It is a work around way to still make use of what I have until I can buy the multi channel J&S.

HxC,
your right, I didn't mention the balancing before, but that goes for a lot of other build stuff too.
Please don't 'try' or experiment things with heat treating and ovens yourself. There are specialized companies for this for a reason. Even then, most all cranks need to be straightened afterwards, which is an outright skill on its own.
Just saying.
BTW, there is no reason to heat treaten it after polishing. Its the other way around: that type of heat threatening, needs 'extreme' (superfinishing) polishing first.

Steve, that is killer smart! Kudos to you for the ingenouety (sp?). I had to sell my other design J&S as well when I switched to wasted spark and ecu control too. I still haven't gotten around to take the signal from the plug somewhere and try datalog it. That would be awesome if I ever get it working like that. I am just not that good with electronics. At all...

Default Re: Received my J&S Vampire SafeGuard system today!

To log, you will need a 3.5mm STEREO plug from Radio Shack. This will plug into the monitor jack on the front of the unit.

Remove the cover from the plug and solder ground and signal wires to the terminals defined as RING and SLEEVE in the pic below. Ignore the TIP, as it has 12v to power the bargraph.

The voltage to be logged varies from 0 to 1.3v in ten steps, 0.13v per step.

In the individual cylinder mode (S2 down), the voltage can vary with each spark event. In retard all mode, the voltage will change once every two revolutions.

If you have the bargraph and wish to log at the same time, you will also need a STEREO "Y" adapter from Radio Shack.

I am going to use a 3.5mm stereo plug splitter (Y) adapter. That way I can use my J&S dash display and log the signal as well.

Cheers for that Steve! John said s/th like that in another topic on STF iirc, but this is even more clear as in what to do.
Almost look simple now :-)

Finally the Canton oil filter system arrived through Finland of all places (tnx Teppo!). These are awesome quality and said to use 'deep filtering' up to 8 micron (!). I couldn't argue with the advantages that gives, so I'll try this out on the 1200cc :)

I also finally made my own tiny brackets so the fuel rail with the pico injectors now attaches onto the already stock mounting hole in the mex manifolds. Curing the Loctite of the NPT threads in the warm house :)

Killer stuff Wally! Makes me want to hop onto my 1600 project again :) The injector adapters are a great idea also. Someone else just showed me his.

What is the advantage to those injectors?

They look like they would fit really nice in tight quarters.

I made my adapters the same, except I welded 'em in instead of o-rings on the OD.

we welded and redrilled the holes that give me most potential to port around them. but the most restrictiv area is not around the injector holes. it is in the bow where the stupid holder for the rails is. i bet its about 26mm in square.

i hope i can be there on april 28. want to meet you in person walter.

wishes.

ps: i asked jose alvarez yesterday how fast he could destroke a 69mm crank to 64mm...but i would have it in my hands in 5 weeks or later. not enough time to make a lateral entry. so still boring 1641cc twin scroll.
but i gess the gas milage would be better in your havy car than a 1200cc.

"heat treating"- by no means i was thinking about "home approach" . My buddy is a thermal engineer in multi-million dollar metal treating facility for aviation and manufacturing industry. But since the shaft has potential of warping I won’t even ask...( nerveless he offered me access to this facility for any of my project so I was keeping this on my mind)
Another question: I’m looking at the pictures- is this going to be dual port 1200?, 1600dp heads undersized for 1200cc diameter?
Thanx HxC

It would be vary cool to have a 1600cc class. I'd go for it
