I realized I didn't put up any pics of the car. I did all the of the body work myself and it has a cheap rustoleum paint job (sprayed not rolled). Fiberglass widened fenders from Glass Action. Porsche D90 wheels, Ghia disc brakes up front and Bugpack disc brakes in the back.

The reason its sitting so high in the back is there is no motor in the car in this pic. I like my car to be very low. I know it is not as practical but I am one of those a$$holes that quotes "its an exercise in form over function". Once the swap is done I will get the car as low as I can.

Looks great brother. What size fenders are those, are they the 1-1/2? I too am looking at the CCC widened fenders to fit what I want to run. Also if it's possible, what size rims are those and the offset? Thanks a bunch.

SemaRag- The fenders are 2" wider in the front and 3" in the back. So the car is 6" wider in the back now. That left me with a huge gap to fill with wheel spacers. So I got 3" wheel spacers for the back and I used 5/16" spacers in the front. This way it looks like the car has a narrowed beam even though it doesn't.

The wheels are 16x6 front and 16x8 in the back. I believe the original offset is et52 on both. I don't know how its going to work out with the big wheel spacers because I haven't driven the car since I installed them. But I am going to find out!

I was worried about the return tube as it would be a pain in the ass to get it in the exact spot where it needs to be. So I looked at aftermarket ej oil pans and most of them just wall off a channel in the corner of the pan. So I will do that for sure.

As mum said if they jumped off a building would you ? Don't look at the crappy aftermarket oil pan designs, they are often built by people who have no real idea WTF an EJ does and doesn't need.

If you read the SAE Design papers on the EJ series engines you will see that oil surge and airation are both serious issue and the little men at subaru went to great lengths to sort it and stop killing engines. Your cross design will introduce a certain amount of baffling by default through the oil volume and its ability to move around. In relation to the oil return I suggest that you add one as the engine really needs to return the oil to the pan below the oil level so as not to airate the sump and cause issue.

I am not saying your engine will blow up without out it, but then again if you drive with out oil it won't blow up straight away yet no one does it.

When I build shortened sumps I go to great lengths to keep the factory return tube and top baffle in place as these two things alone can be the difference between a happy ej and an unhappy owner.

How do you go with engine mounts and getting the bolts back into the sump with the base overhang ? A handy trick I use to use before we added through tubes was to add a few studs to the ej block to allow easy alignment and get the sump in place. As they are sealed on with goo it is important to get it up and in place without getting goo in the sump or cross threading the bolts as you fight with alignment.

Anyway I hope that helps.

Iguana what you said makes perfect sense and thank you for the insight. My original thought was to save time and difficulty but I by no means want to shorten the life of my motor. So I will reinstall the return tube and I will make a top baffle as well though it won't be the original as it was cut to shreds. As for mounting I was careful to make sure I left enough room between the oil pan flange and the widened cross section for the small bolts (although I know it will be a pain in the ass to get them in and an open end wrench will have to be used to tighten them). I love the suggestion of installing studs for alignment and I will be sure to do that as well.

In your experience, do you use an oil pan gasket will sealant applied to both sides or just sealant with no gasket? This is my first subaru engine

Also how much space do you leave between the oil pickup and the oil pan floor for your shortened sumps? I read alot of people make it 1/4" but that was for muscle cars for the most part.
