My 77 Bug w/ stock FI has sat for about 5 months. I can start it but after about a minute it stalls unless I give it gas. I've checked all the hoses. The battery seems weak, but I've charged it. It'll start a few times, then the voltmeter reads less than 12V. Can the weak battey be the problem? Does the computer get power from the battery instead of the altenator when running?
What else should I check?

Re: Stock FI starting problems
If it is reading under 12 volts while running you definetly have a problem.

You should have 13-14V after it starts. Check with a voltmeter while someone tries to keep it running.

If you did not use fuel stabilizer now is the time to drain the fuel tank and change the fuel filter. Charge the battery and test it. If it is bad it can drag the charging system down. This F.I. system is not smart. It only works when all the power and grounds have no resistance, points and timing adjusted properly, no vac leaks IE disconnected or rotted hoses, clean fuel and fuel injectors. Thermo time switch and Aux Air valve work, etc. Good thing is VW provided excellent diagnostics.
