fuel return line solution needed

Post by JSMskater »

ok-- so originally my plan was to plumb this:

into the fuel filler hose. The problem is that the diameter is too small. The aluminum portion of the kit is too small a diameter to allow the stock filler hose to clamp onto, and the bits of hose it came with are too small to fit over the hard tube part of the gas filler neck. So I'm going to have to return it.

My tank is from a carb'd car, and doesn't have a return, and I live where it's too expensive to have one shipped from a later FI bay. So my question is: can I plumb my return line into one of the upper vent tubes on the top of the tank? Anyone have a better/more intelligent solution?

This is for EFI?
You can use a swirlpot made from a fuel filter housing and just plumb the return line back into the swirlpot. Not sure if this helps you or not.

Yeah I saw that and looked into it -- if I have to go and buy a swirltank/surge tank I guess I will but its 100 bucks I kind of don't want to spend and I don't have access to a tig welder to make it myself.

Glenn- I like that setup, but it's basically what I thought of doing with the vent tube at the top of the tank that's already there. I guess a more intelligent question is: is the diameter of one of those vent openings too small to serve as a return?

go to a muffler shop and hit the left overs for some exhaust tubing of the right size and you can go to any auto parts store for the rubber and clamps -- then find you a local welder dude to do the little tube (doesn't have to be bent -- straight, put in at a 45 degree angle) and I bet you will be into it for less than $60

Yeah I worked the phones yesterday trying to get a quote but like many tradespeople they're flaky about calling back - I'm going to walk into a place down the road here that has a good rep and see what they can do for me.

How about something like this.... Yes its for radiator/temp sender but ts aluminum and should be impervious to fuel and has threaded "port" (originally for temp sensor) that may be adapted to any return fuel line fitting....

They come in all shapes and sizes...

What I find happens with this setup is that fuel starvation happens on just about every corner, unless the tank is near full. The tank baffle (that is supposed to hold gas near the pickup) gets emptied out by the pump and return line. Same thing happens when using the tank vent as a return.
A much better method is to locate the return line as close as possible to the pickup so the tank's baffling doesn't get emptied.
On my last conversion, drilled a hole in the tank sending unit holder and ran a hard line down into the tank near the pickup point. You can braze or solder the hard line to the sending unit mount, or use JB weld.
It's even easier if you have a gravity feed tank, just T the return line in between the tank and the fuel pump!
Hope this helps,

What about some sort of weld-on sump? It would work much like the extended oil sumps do.

I think one could design something effective and have it tigged on the bottom of the tank.

Outback Motorsports, (I think they changed names now), used to weld a small sump on the bottom of spun aluminum gas tanks for their EFI Subaru's.

For that matter, you could even use the Sube pump assembly itself. Cut a round hole in the tank.

JSMskater, are you using a donor Subaru engine? Perhaps some other parts from the donor car would be of use here?
