Jack and Stand Points

Post by Bonemaro »

Are there any preferred or safer spots on the Karmann Ghia to used for jacking or for placing jack stands, especially for longer periods of time?

I use the front beam both sides and the rear suspension crosstube both sides.
utterly stable.

Note. Watch and make sure you do not hit the grease fittings on the frt beam.

Helo, do you mean the rear torsion housing? If so, that is what I use also. One funny thing that comes out of this method is if you have the stands all sitting at the same height then you can tell if you chassis has a twist to it if all 4 of the stands don't have contact.

While I haven't purchased any of these myself, something like this should be good to protect the painted surface and may help when putting the stands under flat surfaces as it wouldn't be metal to metal painted surfaces that can slide if bumped hard enough or "just right".

Only if you have matched sets of calibrated stands, and your floor is in calibration.

I do not know how my kids do it, but they have made sure that if I buy a new pair of stands, they remove one within 30 days.

"... Only if you have matched sets of calibrated stands, and your floor is in calibration..." ... or if you get the same problem showing up no matter where you put your toy when you put it on stands.  My glass buggy pan consistently shows up to be about 1/4" high on the passenger side no matter where I store the buggy. I am better off using one stand in the middle of the front beam but if you are working on the car... I don't recommend using only three stands. If I am working on it then I move the stands to under the passenger compartment usually under or as close to under the front cross-piece. My buggy was like that when I got it and from what I have been told, it is fairly common.

There is an old debate whether man can win over inanimate objects or not: folding a shop towel to put over a jack stand and it not falling off when you lower the car on it is part of the debate (some guys use tape to tied the sides together so it won't fall off). I have seen some nasty looking digits from when this happens and the person automatically reaches out to grab the towel as the car "hits the fan"; one of the reasons I stopped doing it, that and there never was a "something" around to use when it was needed.

I also now buy "truck stands" that are a bit taller than "car stands". I didn't know about them until an off-hand statement was made; for an off-road toy that has lifted suspension, it is a good idea to have a set especially if you are a "pudgy bunny".

With "truck Stands" you need a Lift adapter for your floor jack too... gotta get that extra lift as well.
I have found them completely missing more than once. - PILEDRIVER

Unless you know some nasty little secrets  ! Actually, quite often you have to do it in stages or jack at the right place. I use standard jacks for storage but if I have some work to do and I have a set of truck jacks to use I prefer them in most cases.
