davidt's Scat 1915cc Megasquirt and Supercharged build

With Turbo and Super charging you can create massive horsepower with vw motors.

there is also a "closed loop" setting and table for target boost

I run my gtc1244 vgt just as a normal wastgate at the moment. The only change made is, that i use a spring to closed the vans when off boost.... they are normally open..... and closed by vacuum.

Here's a dyno print of my 1776cc turbo (not quite 1915 but close enough for comparison).
I used a TD04l from a suby wrx.
21psi boost made 194bhp & 222lb torque.
Blue line is torque, red line is bhp & pink line is boost.

I've used a few different combinations for my turbo motor now & have to agree that a long, flat torque curve is the nicest to have on a street motor.
Your supercharger build has grabbed my interest!

That brilliant horsepower Dan. Could you please send me copy of that graph to my email as I am having trouble seeing the finer details from the dyno pull (eyes not as good as they used to be). I want a good look of your achievement.

Thanks Dan

Hi David, just looking at your setup. Did you get your pulleys from Kei Car shop? I've heard there are some potential dramas with them and wondered if you'd used them and if you'd found a fix.

BTW, about to do a similar thing to you only with an Oval beetle with 1600 motor and a Microsquirt. I'll be real interested to talk more. :)

Hei PeteW

I am using the pulleys from the Keicar shop. Really interested to find out what the potential dramas might be.

I am too running an amr500 on a std 1600DP With ms. :)

This is how I run my setup (or more correctly about to run...)

I run the gimler pulley from the kei kar shop on the outside of the steel empi pulley I got from Mario with the hidden trigger Wheel. I am really glad I went this way after I saw the Pictures of the carnage the pulley can cause.

David: Really clean installation, like it a lot. I hope you get back up and running soon.

nice build. those amr500 are the limit but in this range they are very nice. sure more power with a turbo. my 1641cc with bmw mini cooper S turbo hase way much more in this range and has boost as low as a supercharger but i miss my amr500 and 300 build. those was so nice to drive.
that kick down with the gas pedal and same fast rise of boost is something special.
do you use any kind of bypass or snozie valve?

Actually, I've got the serpentine style pulleys. Apparently they don't line up properly or something.

Hello to petew, Alexios and my_medusa.

Sorry I have not answered earlier but I have been away with my wife Rachel whilst she was having surgery for cancer. I will be away this week as well. She is recovering so we think it is going to be all right.

Now back to the fun things, blown air cooled engines.

I will try to answer in sequence.

Yes I did purchase my pulleys from the Kei Car Shop petew. I have had a few issues with these pulleys. Had trouble with alignment, clearance with my oil pump, idler pulley bearing siezure and the crank pulley split at the keyway.
Please see my issues and solutions at my blogs:

http://george1972superbug.blogspot.com. ... aring.html
http://george1972superbug.blogspot.com. ... ments.html
http://george1972superbug.blogspot.com. ... ilure.html
http://george1972superbug.blogspot.com. ... ulley.html

Yes I believe I have found some fixes and am happy to talk more about them.

Thanks Alex. I love your brace. That will help plus you have already fitted the alloy pulley to another steel pulley. That was my biggest problem. You might consider a ceramic bearing for your idler as well. ([email protected] 6301-2RS $35US)
Yes, that was my blog that you found. I am happy that you found it useful. I hope that I don't waffle too much. I love my bug. Keep reading them and you will find that it is going well.

Hi medusa. Yes the instant boost is toxic. I don't think I could convert back to naturally aspirated. I did have a BOV (by-pass) fitted when it was blow-through but when I converted to draw-through, I did not fit one. Now I am fitting one again. Trying to reduce intake air temp during cruise and decel. Plus also trying to reduce the sensitivity to throttle at small openings.

A friend of mine (thanks Robin) has given me a Subaru Libarty turbo water-to-air intercooler box that I am going to try to fit somewhere. Hopefully I can find room. Also going to fit a Flex Fuel sensor so I can mix my E85 with petrol depending on availability when I leave the local area.

Been great talking to you guys. I hope I have answered all your questions.

Hooroo

Hi all,

When I was in Brisbane visiting my wife Rachel in Hospital, I called in to PerFOURmance Motorsport and saw an old friend of ours, Robin Berado, to let him know what was happening with Rachel. Before I left, Robin gave me a Water-to-Air intercooler from a Subaru Liberty RS Turbo. These are supposed to be good for 160kw at the wheels. This should be suitable for my application and would help with my high inlet temp issues.

The Subaru Liberty RS Turbo water-to-air intercooler is mounted under the L/H/R mudguard behind the tyre. Then I have soldered a heap of 50mm copper pipe bends to fit in the limited space around the exhaust system. The piping will be wrapped with heatproof fibreglass exhaust cloth to reduce heat transfer from the exhaust system. I still have to solder some of the pipes in the engine bay. Then I will put cuts in two of the uprights and use silicon hose to allow removal of the pipes as required. The rest of the by-pass valve piping also needs to be soldered to the blower outlet. Two injector mounts need to be attached to the intake piping as well. I have made up a water transfer pump from a boat bilge pump to flow the water through the intercooler and on to an A/C condenser core (still need to find one at the wreckers). The condenser core will get mounted under the floor beside the gearbox. Hopefully there will be enough room for a fan as well.
Still waiting for my weld-balanced fan to come back from the supplier (it has been over 5 weeks now) . Had a warranty claim as there was a bad vibration up to 2000rpm.
I have a 30 row oil cooler (with fan) on it's way as well. Still need to purchase an oil thermostat and fan temp switch. Plus I need to relocate my oil filter and then run some new braided oil hoses to make it all connect together.
With these mods, plus I have tightened up the loose L/H inlet manifold that I found after the dyno pull, I am hoping for an increase in horsepower to 120-125hp at the wheels.
Looking forward to getting George back on the road and also to racing at the VW Warwick Drags in October.

Hooroo all.

David
