Fuel pump died, what pump now?

Post by Michael »

Hey Guys,

My fuel pump died the other day and left me stranded on the side of the road. Got the car home safely on a flatbed, so now the work begins!

I currently have in there a Mallory 110FI which is dead (fitted under the fuel tank on the firewall)... I don't want to get another "performance" pump as now I'm leaning more towards a OEM spec pump for longevity (and quieter). I would like something that could fit AN fittings onto as that is how all my fuel connections are right now.

I'm running 43 PSI fuel pressure with 28lbs injectors and I'm pushing no more then 150HP.

Anyone have any suggestions on a pump that would fit the bill?

Thanks,
Michael

I don't know the part number, but there is a ford truck fuel pump that should fit the bill.
I believe somewhere in the late 90's or early 2000's.
Then there is also the Bosch 044.

Walbro 255lph is a good option. Not super quiet though, i currently use a Bosch 044 variant sold by Jay Racing, its quieter, but not a lot. Both are inline pumps, both can have AN style fittings.

Walbro 255 will get you way past 150hp. I was pushing 250 turboed on pump fuel. At just over $100 they are my goto.

Second the Walbro 255. I'm using it on my 2056 Porsche 914.

Yeah, I was looking at the specs on the 044 and it can support up to a 700HP beast. Probably a bit overkill for me. However, I now kick myself as the Mallory 110FI was WAY over kill as well.

Looking at this;

The specs of 910 or even the 911 Bosch pumps would probably fit the bill.

Anyone have reputable sources for these? Looks like there are a lot of knock offs out there.

Mhhh, can't understand why you would spend twice as much for half the flow.

Have you run the numbers on your injectors , is 95 or 130 lph enough?

100LPH is able to support 200HP so it should be good. Maybe it's quieter... :)

Just looking the Walbros now and it looks like a better price point.

You think these are genuine?

If you consider a Bosch roller cell pump, also know that the OEMs ~universally (eventually) used them with feeder pumps and sumps, based on the results of not doing so for a few model years...

My -044 was a killer deal from a lister here who didn't quite believe it really needed a feeder.
(they also really like the output check valve)
Now that I'm running ~E85, I still will have plenty of headroom with the big motor.

BUT:They do not suck.(well)
Double edged sword in this case.

For what the Walbro costs vs. the Bosch, you can carry a spare Walbro.
(IIRC Walbro HPs are gerotor pumps, and DO "suck" well. No feeder required, but a feeder/sump setup has advantages)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

With the pump being underneath the tank, would gravity feed be sufficient for a turbine pump?

A turbine or gerotor pump will work with simple gravity feed, although a return/feed sump setup still has advantages.

I am running an old 1980s Mercedes CIS pump on my baja. I have also used vanagon and bay bus pumps. Under the tank, gravity fed just like a 75-79 l-jet bug.

I don't think you will find an OEM pump with AN fittings. It will require adapters to get there.

After consideration from all that replied as well as reading around, I'm set on the 044 pump. Now I'm on a search for a genuine pump. Looks like the market is FLOODED with knockoffs..

Here is a comparison of the more recent knockoffs

You can go with the newwer screw model, more output, and suppose to be very quiet if not silent.

In-line Screw Pump 330LPH, High-Pressure (Pierburg P/N 7.00228.51)

I found them cheaper but there is good info here
