Doc, the Muir book has an absolutely unparalleled troubleshooting guide in the back.
For a beginner, the tool guide keeps you from buying too many tools, or the wrong ones, and the book pays for itself.
I have been driving ACVW for ten years this go round, and twenty overall, and to this day, keep the idiots guide in the trunk for the troubleshooting section alone.
One note: do not use the Muir book for instructions on how to install the flywheel oil seal. On the third try, followed the Bentley, and stopped tearing the seal immediately on startup.

Re: Pulled the engine out of my Ghia for the first time....
Regarding the John Muir book: The later editions cover all types of ACVW, including the Type IV - its engine has exactly one significant moving part in common with the one in your 'Ghia, and page after page has been added to cover it. If you don't have a Type IV, all that does is introduce confusion.
When I divorced my first wife I gave her a Beetle and an Idiot Book (hoping she'd read it before calling me every time she had a problem). It was one of those Type I,II,III, & IV editions and I must've spent a couple of hours X-ing out the paragraphs which didn't apply to her car.
Far simpler to just check at used book stores for an early edition

I have about 5 copies. one is the original. It's the one i use. Later editions became bloated with addition of more specifics for more models, as stated above. Great, if it's your model.
Bentley book for your model is really the "bible". But the Muir book started my automotive path and i still think it's a great book. If you're just starting, it's THE book, IMO.
