ive done this once before and as I recall, the car didnt run very well. I gapped to .006 and thought I had tdc. I could look it up but, the advice is so good here, I just want to get some tips to insure I do it right.
car is running perfect btw except I can hear a valve or two tapping.
TIA,
RR

Here's a complete tune-up guide including valve adjustments.
www.vw-resource.com/30pict2.html if you engine has a carb with a single adjusting screw in the left side.
www.vw-resource.com/34pict3.html if your carb has two adjusting screws in the left side.
The rest is similar for all engines.

Re: Need to adjust valves on my 1600 dp.
the carb is a weber. there is an adjusting screw on the throttle linkage and one on top left side of the carb that you can only reach with a long flathead from the right side. it looks like its hooked to a small diaphram box.
the carb is a Weber 2bbl #-32 36DFAV.
I dont have the shop manual because its on my notebook and its broke right now. but I cannot find any adjusting screws in the carb body itself.
why would valve adjustments have anything to do with the carb anyway?

Re: Need to adjust valves on my 1600 dp.
The valve adjustment does not have anything to do with the carb.
I wrote those articles to cover the two different stock carb types, and then as I said above, the rest of the articles are the same, meaning in your case, the valve adjustment section is the same.
There is a correct sequence for doing a full tune up, starting with the engine cold and ending with it hot.
You can use either article and just ignore the carb tune up section, since yours is not a stick solex.
