Subaru Tach ouput

Post by Eatoniashoprat »

Hi, This is for those with subies,

What is everyone here doing to hook their tach up to their subaru? I know some subarus ecu's put out too weak of a signal that most tachs won't pick it up, so you can either use a distributorless ignition tach adaptor which just boosts the signal (autometer $80), or I was thinking you could splice into two of the ignitor wires going to the coils, wire diodes into the two new wires, and connect them since this will give you a powerful signal and will be the same as a distributor would put out. If you had an EJ22 or something and didn't have coil on plugs than you could probably do something similar. So, How did you do it?

If it makes you feel better, I'm also using the ECU out put with an autometer gauge, works perfectly...

Anyone know what the output is called technically in the wiring diagrams?

VDO tachs also work, I was very surprised how well it worked.

I have never found a Tacho that didn't work fine on the Subaru ECU factory Output.

If you tell me what ECU you have and what car it came out of I can probably tell you what Pin out you want for the Tacho.

Usually Called Engine Tachometer Output

Sorry for the delay I missed your post. Can you put up a picture of the front of the ECU where the plugs go in

Are you running that ECU on a 22? It looks more like a 2.0L Turbo ECU ?

Funnily enough I am pretty sure I have that exact ecu and loom off a JDM EJ20 Turbo on schedule for second week in March. I will check and get back to you but if you not in a rush I can post you the exact wire colours and pins of that mode ECU rather than generic. There are a few 257's in front but they have different ECU as do the EJ25. If you are in the rush I can see if the other customers are in the rush and pull the EJ20 Turbo fwd to do it early Feb. Just let me know, doing 2 looms a week at the moment so no shortage of Subaru Schematics being printed lol
