97 2.2 suby wiring - removing harness right now - help!

Post by andk5591 »

Have searched and searched. 97 Outback sport (imprezza wagon) 2.2 SOHC. This is going into a 66 bug. Will probably be using an aftermarket fuel pump with stock tank, but will probably plumb in a small surge tank ala Joel's set up. Planning on using the Sub fan circuit, but don't have to.

As far as abilities - have wired quite a few older VWs with no issue - have basic electronic knowledge. Have NEVER worked on a newer car with an ECU.

Tore out the dash and am heading down to shop in a couple hours to keep going. My ecu has the one large connector on it - not the three that are on the earlier style. I am assuming that any connections running to the ABS and tranny controllers can go away. Obviously need the connections to the engine and O2 sensor. Any other things I need to be concerned about? Also assuming any connections to the rear of the car that run down the passenger side can go away (but was hoping to use the stripped out harness to confirm the engine is running OK before I yank it - meaning that I need to get power to the fuel pump at some point - assuming that is all I need in the rear, 12V to the pump itself).

I do or do not need to keep any of the fuseboxes and relays - assuming fan relay if using Suby fan wring.

Do I need a catalytic converter or can I simply plumb the O2 sensor into the exhaust? Any other insights or links.

Thanks in advance.

I have the harness out of the car and am in the process of configuring it. I found ecu pin outs and will be hitting it tomorrow to make sure that I have everything that I need connected. Still a little unsure about what to do about the fuseboxes. I believe the on write up just kept the relays, but I need to review it again.

Just want to verify that I dont leave anything on the car that I may need.

Just plug the loom into the EJ22 and then plug in the AFM, Ignitor and then cut everything else off and strip it out.

If you want you can keep the ODB 2 Plug , Brown power relay and silver with green clip fuel relay but I find it easier to cut them off and put them back after cleaned the loom.

The EJ is a very simple loom, nothing to be worried about.

With the o2 you can put it back in with out the cat. If you have the ODB2 setup you may want to add a ODB Stand Off which will get your readings back in range and make your ECY happy.
