I actually just purchased a ej25 with VVT and I am looking for a computer to control it, otherwise I have a really big paper weight

Yeah so use the standard Subaru ECU that ran the motor from the factory. The Subatronics CANbus emulator will let that ECU run in a non-Subaru environment if you have the other matching Subaru parts as per the website.

@Corysvdub Megasquirt can do VVT, I was looking into it a while back because I wan'ted to put it on my Mazda3
so they will end up updating the firmware to control more vehicles:

I agree with nick @volksbugly, ms can handle vvt. if you have the entire harness and ecu and motor is stock then run that but otherwise squirting it is the best option in my opinion. mario at thedubshop is developing a pretty cool new ecu running ms that looks very nice and you can then build a very clean custom wiring harness.

Depends on how many vvt channels and what other I/O are needed, may need MS3+MS3X or a MS3Pro.
From memory MS3... can control 4 VVT channels.
(No VVTuner required, IIRC thats a pretty limited one trick pony for ECUS that cannot do VVT directly on one engine model)
I'd investigate getting an OEM ECU if available and workable, at least compare the total costs.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

How about the Haltech 1500? I heard it can work pretty good. But is pricy.

Since this came back up to the top...
The microsquirt worked great. Cost about $300. Took a weekend to wire everything. Uses GM Map sensor, GM IAT sensor, subaru Idle valve, subaru ECT sensor, subaru 36-2-2-2 STI wheel and stock crank sensor.
Basically all worked pretty easy and completely tunable fuel and timing maps. This was on a non -vvt engine... but the code does exist now to operate vvt.
